Donald Trump

That's the million dollar question for these guys and it will all end up as damage limitation exercise and the party. The evidence is stacking up by the hour and the Ukraine call is only the tip of the iceberg, lets not forget that the UK government is involved in what Trump has been up to. They only picked one case that was easy to prove but there are far skeletons in the closet that will out at some point to unless Dumb Donald does a deal (which will probably where this all ends up).
It would be a shame if a deal is agreed. He deserves to stand trial in a criminal court for his crimes along with the rest of the Trump criminal enterprise.

If it looks l ike he is going to lose then that is even worse for his impeachment. As a Rep Senator why back him if he will lose anyway and end up in prison. Might as well get him out and come out of it looking like you were never on his side.
Because he probably wont lose the election and he absolutely, definitely will never up in prison. That is a total fantasy. The Democrats have not sufficiently got their house in order imho as there should really be a frontrunner or maybe 3 electable frontrunners by now with the election only a year away. There is too much in it for Rep senators yet, being a senior elected rep in a party that is in power is too attractive a proposition. It brings money, influence, status, jobs on committee's, lobbyists want them, all kinds of things. I hate the man but pinning hopes on them is a pipedream.

There's a fair chance that the Dems won't want to rush the impeachment process. If the republican senators realise the writing is on the wall for their own chances of re-election they would rather get rid as soon as possible and get a replacement in place for long enough to mount a decent election campaign. If it drags on till the summer and beyond, the Republicans will be wiped out in the next election whether Trump gets removed or not. They probably will lose heavily anyway but they will have a better chance with a new leader in place sooner rather than later.

It looks like the normal Rep process will be locked down so it is difficult to see how he faces a challenge. A challneger has to win a minimum of 8 states to get on the ballot at the national convention next August. I doubt any will come close let alone win. The primaries run from Feb - June. If his name is on the ticket he wins - even mid impeachment.

Agree re the Dems. The 3 front runners are exactly the sort of politician they should not run against Trump. And talk about Hilary making a late bid. Again the perfect oposition for Trump.

It is a shame that they just dont have any standout politicians people would like to get behind. Biden is not up to it and any campaign with him in it will be hard viewing and ruthless. Trump will character assassinate him and it will be that old 'lock him up' nonsense all over again. I like Warren but unfortunately the backward masses over there are just nowhere near advanced enough to countenance electing a woman as president. Sanders is seen as socialist so ditto, plus he is getting on and has just had a clutcher. That is the best they are offering and it will not be enough.

I think Harris is in with a shout if she starts to gather momentum into the new year. She is smart enough, and certainly capable of holding her own as we saw in the Barr confirmation hearings.

Warren and Sanders are too far left, Biden is a bit of a liability now, and the likes of Castro haven't really got the experience. I can't see anyone else making a dent to be honest. The only fly in the ointment is Gabbard. She could certainly split the Dem's in half in some States, which may just be enough to hand the Republicans the election, presuming Trump is still in office at that point.

All of which means he will get re-elected, and there wont be sufficient change in Congress either. As such, sadly, all the impeachment talk and activity is futile

Not sure about impeachment being futile. Even before the public hearings his approval rating are being nibbled away. Once the evidence is made public, and the full extent of his crimes is revealed it'll be downhill rapidly. I'm not sure it's going to be too long after that before one or two big hitters in the Senate start to make moves to distance themselves from Trump given how toxic he will be. Romney has already taken the plunge, but nobody wanted to follow at that point. Soon it will be Republicans in full on damage limitation mode, and they can't say they didn't see it coming.

I can't see him doing a deal. He doesn't deal with reality, he won't accept he is going to lose or that he has lost until they turn up to remove him.
Unless some grown ups around him manage to convince him otherwise it will be a very ugly end.

I know that the Republicans do have some serious fruitcakes in their ranks but surely there are moderates in there that can see the Trump is collateral damage to future elections he will take the Republican party down with them in all this.
