Donald Trump

He lives in court and has done his entire career. I don't think he views any of that as a worry. Delay is his weapon (as it was with Nixon) and it's the one the thing he indisputably good at. And he'll be so well off he'll never have to worry again after the book(s) he publishes and the speaking fees he'll attract.
He’s not been in criminal prosecution very often until right before the 2016 campaign, which is an entirely different beast, and one in which he is not accustomed to, especially the level of scrutiny he’ll be under.

And I think you are overestimating how badly his businesses are and will be doing when he leaves office. You are right that he is nowhere near a billionaire and his brand is primarily wrapped up in that lie. After he leaves office it will be relatively easy to expose it and his failing enterprises (again the level of scrutiny will be far beyond what he has ever seen in the past) and the legal fees to defend himself in numerous criminal cases will drain him of any revenue he generates from speaking engagements and media rights sales.

And that’s not even counting what Putin may decide to do — Trump is compromised, after all, and who knows if Putin will want to expose him as such to further destabilise US government legitimacy or silence him to allow Putin to repeat it with similar tactics and less relative scrutiny.

Trump knows he will be attacked by all sides, just like most dictators, and will do everything he can to remain in power as that is the only way he can maintain a semblance of control.

That’s why we have the Ninth Circuit! ;-)
For now...

I didn’t cite causation. In fact, I stated he could raise hundreds of millions, if not over a billion, dollars for his re-election campaign, which drenches the airways and social media with his message. Indeed, someone recently stated that Trumps social media program is the most sophisticated social media promotion plan ever seen or financed (wish I could remember where that came from, my apologies).

Under the current campaign financing laws, money is speech. More money = more speech. If money wasn’t a player, the Dem field might still be at 10-15 candidates.

Again, I’m not saying it was the reason he was elected, but it has certainly helped him every day since then.

I got you. But I view this differently. The airwaves are one thing, but the entire emergence of the internet as a communication channel means money in fact isn't speech. I've expounded on this many times. It's why radical views get equal footing with conventional, moderate ones -- because when there isn't an earned bully pulpit, when everyone regardless of qualification has access to immense distribution created by instant audience expansion (i.e. what "goes viral"), that's damn near free.

Look, you're a pilot. What if I walked into your cockpit and said, "Dude, I've got 30 hours in a Piper Cherokee and played Flight Sim every day for three years; hand over the yoke"? Well, plenty of regulations, your company, and you probably physically would stop me. You're qualified to fly; I'm not. There's a system in place that ensures only the qualified do the job.

Well, when media was controlled through a narrow venturi of editors at the NYT or CBS News, by definition what was distributed was what would appeal to the broadest audience. If you were an expert on a topic, you got an interview or a story. If you weren't, you didn't. But look now. The MSM has not only been attacked by all side (conservatives, liberals, City fans) but a near costless medium with potentially instantaneous broad distribution to all four corners of the globe exists. The quality control -- the venturi/filter -- doesn't exist.

Trump's Twitter feed is an ideal example.

I'm not saying money doesn't play a critical role. More is better. But ask my teenage kids about their favorite YouTube personalities and how they became so. Hell, ask ME. It wasn't because they started off with money.

The emergence of social media and the elevation of radicalized, simplified perspectives (lies) to that on equal footing with truth is what allowed Trump to win, not his money. Maybe his money helps him win more now though.

Well . . . we shall see. Hopefully!

Genuinely hope all goes well!

Otherwise, I am ****ed no matter where I go based on the current madness on both sides of the Atlantic... I suppose the missus and I will just move to Switzerland.

Should probably be doing that now, anyway, before the impending global economic meltdown being hastened by the coronavirus outbreak.

New Zealand or Greenland would be better, more geographically isolated.

But we lose the economic and social benefit of already having places to live and family/friends in Switzerland.

Plus, have you ever stayed in a chalet in the alps you can only get to be hiking in? ;-)
