Trump is trying to con people with simple free market economics.

If China produce something comparable to a product made in the USA, and are able to make it and ship it for less than the cost of the US equivalent then people will buy Chinese goods. If Trump decides to put a tariff on the Chinese goods, then US citizens will have to pay the extra cost to either buy the Chinese goods, or the US equivalent. In essence, the US citizens are paying the difference, not China. Yes, I understand that the balance of payments is in favour of the US overall, but US consumers are still out of pocket. They are just too dumb to see it.

The Director of National Intelligence appears to contradict (beforehand) - that's going to cause waves
Trump does say things which are wrong and/or without basis - this past history undermines his own statement

It's just a bad way to present a case in a convincing manner.

I know what you mean. I don't actually follow Trump but I occasionally pop on Factbase to see how many times the 'hardest working President ever' has tweeted. I don't generally read them.

- we did a trade deal and everyone was happy.
- China's bought lots of stuff but then we noticed a virus, and it's not acceptable that it came out of China.
