Because I knew about the guy and watched the Apprentice and just thought he was a prick, but didn’t know he was racist.

The Trump Management Corporation was sued in 1973 by the US Justice Department for racial discrimination. It's all public domain information, but given the culture and environment it was largely ignored by the mainstream media. Everyone who ever had any dealings with Trump knew what he was though. It's fair to say he hasn't changed his views.
I agree. When being a casual or even outwardly-obvious racist isn’t the worst thing someone can say about you, that says a lot about you, none of it good, all of it horrifying. Which has been kind of my point for over 30 years about this guy. It’s part of the reason why “Trump is a racist” as an anti-Trump argument never mattered to me — because he’s a fucking liar, we don’t know what he really believes about ANYTHING. Other than if it benefits him (or harms an enemy), it’s good. He truly is the pinnacle of appalling self-interest. I heard that pre-election McConnell had an approval rating of 17% in Kentucky but managed to win his seat in the Senate with 57% of the vote.It would not surprise me in the slightest if there was massive voter fraud in some of the Republican states. I think someone posted an article about odd voting patterns in Kentucky for Moscow Mitch where voting machines from a company not used in any of the Democrat states was used. Most accusations from Trump and the Republicans tend to be projections of what they do themselves and get away with, which gives them the idea to make the accusations in the first place.
Yes I suppose he had some. He first flirted with running for president in 1987, but seriously considered it for 2000 when he was became significantly more political. It was the Obama birth certificate bullshit he started though that really did it and after that he certainly had supporters, and the humiliation that Obama publicly handed out to him cemented his resolve to get political. He was just a prick on TV to me back then.
But regarding the racism stuff, he was nowhere near as in the limelight nor as famous, so the odd incident, behind the scenes, is less likely to make news as the President or a Presidential Candidate saying it in the open.
That’s why less people would have known who he truly was.
