Although I am unfortunately not surprised as I said awhile ago that she would struggle to make it to Election Day due to her failing health (despite the fact that she was a resolute fighter, overcoming cancer many times), her passing is still tragic beyond even the immediate impact on her family, and I am immensely saddened by her death.

She was an incredible person who achieved more than the vast majority of people could ever dream to do in their lifetime... combined.

2020 can fuck right off.

As well as the obvious loss for her family the implications of another Supreme Court judge selected by Trump are huge and will likely be disastrous for the US and consequently the rest of the western world. Although that sounds like hyperbole the prospect of a 6:3 split in favour of Conservatives could set the country back decades. There will be a party at the White House tonight.

The short term implications are, frighteningly, perhaps worse than the long term ones: the Trump camp and McConnell will undoubtedly be looking to get another lackey confirmed before the election (or shortly after) to assist with ensuring Trump stays in office, especially as Roberts can’t be “trusted”.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court will just be a rubber stamp committee if that happens. It won’t matter much who specifically is on the court.
