I assume that will mean that either nothing is done until Powell's term is up, or Trump will 'fire' him and appoint a family member, and then no-one will know what is going on until Clarence Thomas says something mad.

Trump is going to put immense pressure on Powell (really the Fed governors) to lower rates regardless of the direction of the economy and Fox et al will eventually make him the lightning rod for all ill as they did Fauci when he doesn’t do precisely what Trump suggests (unless there’s a recession, in which case the Fed will lower, but Trump will blame Powell et al for not acting faster). Powell’s term is up in 2026. After that the appointment is a wild card. Powell will fight any attempt to be “fired” given he technically can’t be and I’d guess would win but honestly who knows?

I think that perhaps the pertinent point here is that a man who has little to no trust in vaccinations, to a point that he founded "Childrens Health Defence" (which is anything but) who are basically an anti-vaccine activist group, has been appointed to the position of health secretary. Surely you see this as a substantial red flag? I don't disagree with some (many) of his other stances, but they are secondary to his position on vaccination are they not?

However, I wouldn't rule out a Liz Truss style market melt down. If Trump goes hard on more tax relief and lower tax rates. Wile the Musk efficiency drive turns out to be BS. And Trump also starts threatening tariffs that is a recipie for massive inflation. But shorter term the bond market could wobble. End of the day if you double the amount of bonds that will be issued you halve the value. Markets can't be bullied.

Liz Truss dabbled in fantasy economics and the markets reacted. Trump is not immune to market forces.

Truss was obsessed with growth and came up with a Budget that baffled 'everyone' as to how growth was to occur. The markets agreed with 'everyone' and the markets crashed.

The markets rose on Trump's victory but, from what I've read, his policies, hard line anti immigration/removals and tariffs, will, as you say, lead to inflation. Trump will also, presumably, cut taxes and 'wastage' (jobs, services, military spending) and this may also lead to inflation.

Similar to Truss, it's certainly risk taking of the highest order and he has jam packed his cabinet with similar high risk takers. He needs an awful lot of luck to succeed and, even if he does, there will be an awful lot of bodies lying on the floor.
