If Trumps campaign thought there was the slightest chance he could have beaten Harris in a debate they would have jumped at it. They need it.

So either they've finally realised the bloke is a full blown nutjob incapable of staying on message, and who can't stop rambling incoherently.

Or Trump genuinely believes he won, and he overruled them.

Either one is quite funny.

Are the two positions mutually exclusive, though? His team know he is incapable of staying on message, but rather than confront him with that reality and caution against a further debate, they can, instead, flatter his ego and agree that he was triumphant and so has no need to accept any fresh challenge. After all, their futures are tied to him winning at all costs, which means not telling him the truth is a small price to pay.

Arguably, the two explanations are not mutually exclusive. Given his track record, the man displays all the characteristics of a psychopathic narcissist so, of course, he'll never admit to having lost the debate (particularly to a woman of colour). Where the former is concerned, I'd be surprised if the coterie of sycophants around him don't already realise that they're working for a certifiable nutjob. What they also know only too well is that any dissent will be met with the order of the boot pretty sharpish thereby putting an end to what is no doubt a nice little earner and opportunity for the unscrupulous to make a name for themselves in politics.
