Dortmund Fans

Well...how to put it...

The east of Germany is still suffering from higher unemployment rates than the west, right wing parties are once again on the rise and in general it feels like the berlin wall is still present in a lot of people´s heads.

When it comes to football its a bit like the poor east against the rich west and in addition to that the eastern Ultra groups consider themself to be "more hardcore" than the western ones.

A couple of years back when Dresden, Rostock, Frankfurt and Cologne were playing in the 2nd division (all 4 clubs notorious for their following) it was some sort of war going on between the eastern (Dresden/Rostock) and western groups (Frankfurt/Cologne) which resulted in massive amounts of police when the teams met, the groups stealing scarfs and banners from their eastern/western rivals etc.

Dresden once made a huge banner out of nicked scarfs which said "Wessi Ultras aufs Maul" which roughly translates into "Beat the western ulras up".

Dresden and Rostock are famous for the atmosphere they create but it often comes with some sort of trouble as well.

This is what happened when Dresden played Dortmund in the Cup. It was a tuesday evening and Dresden - Dortmund distance is not exactly short and still they brought a ton of fans and showed the "yellow wall" how its done. ;)

Even in lower leagues the atmosphere is pure class. Look at 1.39 in the vid.

Is it still big different between east and west in Germany? I notice that the fans of the clubs in the east likes to pint out that they are from east germany.

Union Berlin fans have this chant: "They West will never buy us" or so
This is by the way the match in your vid from the other side

It all looks good on those YouTube clips except they still wear boot cut jeans in Germany I see

Always behind us here in England on a lot of things

Everytime I am in the UK I am surprised to see lots of young people wearing shoes with those velcro fasteners. In Germany you usually stop wearing them once you leave the kindergarden....different countries, different fashion I guess. ;)

Nice one. Ha ha

I agree laces are a bastard

Thanks for the info. Did not know it still was a split in Germany. Fantastic support anyway. I talked to a German a few weeks back who could tell me the clubs always listen to the fans and their wishes. And also you have free train tickets to the away matches?

Oh, there is still a split. And it is not that everybody feels like a winner with the changes that have been made to the East in the last 20 years. In the GDR everybody had a job - and everything that comes with it even if it was not on the same level than in the west. Some people in my age had learned jobs like milker - handmilking cows. It was somehow a new industrialisation process that came with the fall of the wall - industries that were not running on profit or could not in the western world were destroyed and there is a lot regions in which a lot people left for the west or better regions - and only the old ones etc. stayed. Wages and rents are still a lot lower than in the West if it is not based on contracts that want equal standard. And the unemployment rate is a lot higher. There is a lot more left and right radicals in the East than in the West and there is areas I would not feel very safe to go if I would be coloured.

their defender Piczczek is playing women football from now on :-)

Mate, it seriously is FACT that you in Germany, are at least 2 years behind us, however, that Germans still wear bootcut jeans, is utter nonsense. Alles Gute :)
