Quick, has a good cross in him and wouldn't cost the earth. Hopefully Vinnie can put in a good word. He might be what we need. The hype surrounding Munian and Lavezzi would mean that they would be unrealistic targets. I really believe he would key when we are on a counter as he is a player with immense pace.

Decent shout, although i've not seen him that much he's always looked good when i've watched PSV, good close control, crossing and he can finish.

Perhaps a budget alternative to Hazard and those you've mentioned, and i suspect he'd be a little happier playing a squad role.

However i think Mancini will be aiming higher in the Summer, one of the main things about someone like Hazard is you get the impression he has total confidence in his own ability, like he knows he's good enough to play at the top level and won't hide. You never know how a slightly lesser player is going react, whether they'll step up or if the pressure will be too much.

Would be a huge gamble. It's only his first year at Dutch topclub PSV. Proved his doubters wrong at that stage. But playing PL football, especially at a title contender, is something totally different.
Don't think he's City material already. He needs to play another year at PSV on a good level, or step up to a bigger league mid-table club.

Not the biggest gamble as I think we could easily get him for less that £10 million. Hazard is a bigger gamble as he has the 'hype' that the British media put upon him. Every move he makes will be scrutinized. Mertens may be our version of Valenica.

Doubtful. PSV paid 8M£ for him themselves, why on earth would they sell him after a year when he's had a wonderful first season? The fans would be outraged and they're pretty pissed off already.

An extract from Bayern Forum

Mertens is a player in the mould of Ribery. Great right foot, very good left foot.
He's a fast running, quick thinking and quick shooting playmaker. Good crosser, has made a good amount of free kick goals in his time with PSV Eindoven.
At 1.70-ish he might take some time to adapt to the physicality of the german league.
He is scaringly similar to Ribery when we first signed him. He has not had a serious injury as of yet.
He isn't a player who likes to backtrack alot. But that can change, I think he's 22-23.
But I kid you not. That kid's gonna be something someday.

He is a player that we don't have and I rate him highly. Probably we could offer around £12 million for him but this guy will be first team for Belgium within the next year.

Look at these stats 40 23 22(matches,goals,assists)

Mertens dives a lot...

I think most City fans are beyond caring if we cheat after the ridiculous amount of decisions against us this season.

No way near good enough for City yet. Needs another 2 years to play at a constant high level making him suitable for City. Played in 1st division of Holland 2 years ago, as did Strootman. You can clearly see they struggle adapting to the changing level they're playing at. Lets see how he'd handle Champions League. Against Valencia last month he proved to be the worst player on the pitch.

I'm interested.

I don't watch enough Eredivisie to consider myself informed, and I know some might question his attitude or penchant for acting, but I'm interested. He just overshadowed Hazard against England, he looked comfortable out wide on both sides of the pitch (rather than playing more centrally, like some of our other "wingers"), his record on club level is fantastic, and he's linked with Bayern and Inter.

I hadn't really supported our search for a winger because I couldn't think of any worth buying, but can anyone tell me why this kid isn't worth a shout?

Please god no. We don't need to be signing diving cheats like this guy. It's just wrong for City.

Again, I'm the first one to admit I don't know enough about the guy, so this is a legitimate question: is this statement based on a reaction to one game (in which case you could pick out similar unfortunate incidents for a third of our team, at some points in their careers, to label them "diving cheats"), or is this an informed accusation based on watching him play throughout the past?

And who is he gonna replace exactly?

I guess that depends on how good he is, which is what I'm asking here.

And I can't answer for the population crying out for a winger, but presumably he'd be a replacement for AJ if we sell him, a simple contingency for width if we don't, and an option to put in crosses when playing through the middle isn't working either way.

For the record, my apologies... terrible timing to ask about the guy, coming off the back of an admittedly cunty game. But at the risk of anticipating how objections could derail this thread, what I wanted to know is this:

Is Dries Mertens...

A) a talented but cunty winger who always gets up to no-good (in which case, fuck him).

B) a talented winger who had a cunty game, but is predominantly a decent lad (in which case, we've forgiven worse), or...

C) not all that talented, temperament be damned.

I'm just asking because if it's B, and he's as good as his record dictates, and he's cheaper than everything else out there, plays a position we're in the market for, outshines his multi-million pound contemporaries, and can be purchased relatively cheaply under the radar (despite potential city-related mark-ups), then it's worth having a conversation about him.

That's all I'm on about here.
