Dry January...

This will be my fourth straight year of dry January. Not going to lie, it’s always a bit of a struggle, but it’s worth it as I sleep so much better and have so much more energy during the day. One day, I’ll do more than a month.
Well done. I’d really struggle. My missus did it last year (I’ve never tried it) and then did an extra month - “just because she could !”.
We drink regularly but not heavily. I will try it one year !

Just knock it on the head completely and after a few weeks you won’t miss it and your health & wallet will be all the better for it
That's it mate. I've been a weekend binge drinker for pretty much 30 years and fed up with it now. Obviously love getting pissed but those few hours of enjoyment aren't worth the days of depression and lack of enthusiasm and motivation afterwards nowadays.

I've clearly noticed a huge change in my wellbeing in recent months and wasn't looking forward to the incoming sessions so have purposely dropped out of gatherings to avoid drinking.
My last drink was our works do on 12th December. Enjoyed it at the time, but once again, didn't enjoy the following days, especially after experiencing plenty of sober weekends leading up to it. The booze I'd bought for the Xmas break I took into work and gave to work colleagues to get it out of the house.

And yes, have definitely saved money since June. Makes you realise how much money you're pouring inside yourself for those few hours of enjoyment, while poisoning yourself in the process.

One of the hardest aspects of non drinking is missing a beer or three with your ‘mates’ in the pub and footy.
Also those rewarding pints after a shit day or week….

Yeah. It's Friday, let's get on it, or looking forward to a Saturday in the pub with my missus.
I also love listening to my music when I'm leathered and can sit in the house drinking until sunrise with my tunes on.
Another challenge will be going on holiday. I love holiday beers.

A simple way to watch your intake is not to drink at home. For me drinking is a social thing and I'm certainly not going to do that on my own.
Dry January should be easy if you do the above. Who goes out in January anyway!

How did you manage it mate? What’s the knack?
It’s not easy but it gets easier

Need to find hobbies and recreational activities you enjoy to replace the times when you usually drink.

For me, I joined a local walking club, started Tai Chi, caught up with all the books I wanted to read, films I wanted to see.
Also doing voluntary work twice a week.

Once you’ve got past the first few weeks it gets a bit easier, you need a bit of willpower to stay in control.

Good luck and a here’s to a sober 2026!

Don't see the point in this , restraining for 1 month then hammering it for the rest of the year. If you know you have a drink problem then you need to perm reduce intake not just stay sober through gritted teeth for 1 month then return to normal ways. If anything i bet the intake in Feb increases above normal levels as a "reward" for staying of it for a month

Having a dry January doesn't necessarily mean hammering it the rest of the year. For me it is more of a reset after the Christmas period.

Having plans in place for the following day and keeping busy/having hobbies is key.

Not everybody's cup of tea but I would happily play on my PS5 all day and night and not be tempted one bit to have a beer. If the Mrs is about then will try and go to the cinema or go on long walks. We don't have kids so a lot of our time is free which makes it more of a challenge to resist.
