On reflection I don’t think the riots were politically motivated by the far right the incident was just a trigger like people are saying it belies the problems Dublin is having, and to fair it’s not a unique situation, here in Manchester you have all the problems of creeping gentrification, pushing people out of areas and making housing unaffordable to those on ordinary incomes. It does seem that a rising tide does not float all boats

My first thoughts. Easy to start brandishing such comments about like “far right”.

What if people are just pissed off that someone who the country gave safe haven to (though i thought algeria was a safe haven) stabs people outside schools.

Trouble is, the minute anyone asks a question about immigration and its affects on local populace , they are immediately branded a racist. Loads do it in here.
Its really not helpful and we should be allowed to discuss it without silly accusations being banded about

And it’s perfectly possible to do so, make your point fairly and don’t target a particular race or creed, there’s nothing racist about discussing the cons of immigration

Exactly. But thats not how it pans out too often. I see it on here, someone dares to give an opinion on the subject that goes against the perceived grain and they are accused of being a racist. Its ridiculous.

Ive noticed and seen quite a few vids over the last few months in ireland and there is clearly an issue. Are irish people racist for having concerns? Absolutely not. Of course not , but already the media and posters on here are saying that the riots were influenced by the far right. What a stupid thing to say
 
Obviously the far right was involved. It's not a normal reaction to riot because of the ethnic origin of a suspect/perpetrator of a horrible crime.
 
It was started by far right. There was post on social media to gather at the Dail. There are videos of them all chanting 'get them out'. And urging people to attack the Gardai. It's just a shame they dont March like that in opposition to the scummy drug dealers selling heroine to their kids for the last 3 decades.

There is a housing issue here amongst other things, and as I said before there needs serious discussion on immigration, the vetting of them and were they are being housed when accepted here. For example they have then crammed into a warehouse/old office building nearby here. It's not fair on them either. I'm sure that's not what they were promised. And they are not mostly Ukrainian Woman and Children as it was claimed they would be. There are some shanty like towns popping up in inner city working class areas last few years also. Nothing seems to affect the more affulent areas.

There has always been a racist undercurrent here. Like anywhere I suppose. It's not like it never existed. The rise of far seems to have really took off during Covid. Social media awash with conspiracy theories. They seem to belive everything they hear unless it doesn't align to what they belive. They are a strange breed.

The burning down of the hotel was the end of a siege that that lasted all day, by the Far right not disenfranchised youth.

There may have been genuine protestors mixed in but once it kicked off, from what I witnessed, it got over taken by mostly kids and local scumbags (scallys in Manchester) just out to cause trouble and commit crimes, nothing politically motivated to it IMO.

Let's see if they get so passionate during the next housing or cost of living demonstration. They won't.

This. If the awful stabbings had been perpetrated by a born and bred Irishman we wouldn't have seen those riots. In all likelihood if he was an immigrant from the UK, North America, Australia or many European countries then we wouldn't have saw this reaction either. The incident itself isn't what kicked everything off but the man's background. Hence, far right.

This is a totally genuine question because maybe I’m just looking in the wrong places but…

Are there any specific examples of this on here? I don’t think I’ve ever seen somebody called a racist for stating such - especially given 99%+ of people want controlled migration. Literally nobody I know wants completely unfettered immigration, so why would discussing the policy ever be a problem? I’ve seen people called racist, of course, but it’s usually because they follow up that sentiment with something that actually is racist.

It all sounds a bit Stewart Lee “they’ll throw you in jail for saying you’re English”

I’m happy to be proven wrong.

How do you know this?
I'm intrigued to hear why the stabbing of school children can be separated on a scale of the perpetrators ethnicity.
Hideous crime regardless

My pet theory about one of the factors that lead to the Brexit side winning the referendum was that anyone who expressed any concern or worry about immigration was immediately shut down and branded a racist or bigot (by the likes of Gordon Brown and the press).

It therefore became a taboo subject and so anyone who didn't think immigration and multiculturalism was a great thing or had any doubts learned to keep quiet rather than challenge the mainstream orthodoxy. There was a lot of simmering resentment as a result and and it was only when the Brexit vote came along they were able to express themselves in the privacy of the ballot box

No-one in power really took the time to explain the benefits of immigration, or to discuss the negatives, and it was easier just to say how awful those who questioned it were than the to win an argument on the actual issue they raised.

It looks to me like we haven't moved on very in terms of being able to have any kind of rational discussion of the pros and cons of immigration.
