Eberechi Eze

I’ve been typing on this forum too much so I’m kinda lazy, I’ll write a bit.

He is closest in similarity to Bernardo Silva.

A maestro with the ball, doesn’t lose it, but can also glide past players pretty easily. Yet has an engine to run for days and help the defence.

He links the attack from the defence, so while he doesn’t huge goals and assists, he still gets quite a bit for what his role requires.

Barella just in serie had 12, then year before 14 goal contributions in the league alone.

These are such rare qualities in football, the complete midfielder who controls the ball well, dribbles well, defends and runs a lot, and chips in with goals and assists to boot.

He is everything on why I rate Bernardo Silva so highly.

You can look at his fbref stats (I’m too lazy) to see how complete he is.
I agree with most of what you've said.

But let me add my worries.
1. He plays in Serie A, defenses are generally easier to open up( in spite of the historical reputation).

2. He is slower than I'd like. Not very athletic. Combative but not agile ( I know, I know neither is Bernado - hence the comp).

3. I won't say say he is a maestro with ball or glides past defenders with ease ( that more accurately describes Eze). He is efficient with the ball would be a better descriptor.

4. Has immaculate shooting technique ( you didn't add that.) But average ball control ( he would not be press proof like Bernado. Not even Kova levels at that).

But looking at your overall description, I agree with everything and don't think that adds up to World Class.

Also, he won't get free kicks here. So expect his goal contributions to drop a bit.

But fair enough. I think we just rate attributes differently.

I won't be crying if we got Barrella, that's for sure.

Maybe I haven't seen him enough. Always thought Zaha was much better, and he was nowhere near City standard. Even at QPR he looked like a Decent player, but nothing special.

Wirtz, Barella, Mitoma or Olmo and I'll be happy.
So, you admit to not having seen enough of him, but have concluded he's not good enough.

BTW, the club's objective isn't to make you happy

It is far harder to try and break down defences playing for City than it is any other team in the league. Teams play out of their skin like it’s their cup final against us, often in a deep defensive system. If they don’t, they’ll get twatted 6-0. For us to have players break that down makes them top class.

Someone with similar stats at a midtable/bottom half club doesn’t show a great deal of a comparison.

Midtable/bottom half players have far more time and space in far less intense games to do better than our players do against the same teams. And no midtable/bottom half players have ever played in big games like we do when it becomes title level games.

The games we’ve had against Liverpool over the years, less so Arsenal last season who aren’t as good as Liverpool have been as our challengers, but still count them… for any City players to pick up stats in those games where the level of competition is far beyond anything any midtable/bottom half player ever plays in, takes them well above the midtable/bottom half teams+players.

This is where stats are misleading.

It’s more important to look at what the player actually does while watching the game that go off any stats. Even little things like what his body position and balance is like when passing, crossing and shooting, are often more important than a stat is when judging a player. Other things like what a player does after they’ve passed, crossed or shot. Does he turn his head to see what’s around him before he receives a pass? Does he get his head up to see what’s in front of him and see what’s on when he’s received a pass? What’s his thought process like when the ball is in different areas of the pitch? What’s his movement like off the ball?… But there are no stats for those things.
Really insightful reply. Thanks.

This excellent post should be pinned at the top of every forum on Bluemoon.

(Except Off Topic of course)

Bizarrely think he looks like he would be great on the right wing… pace to burn, strong in the ball, great cross on him, and obviously knows where the net is. Its a very good highlight reel considering he’s playing in the PL for a mid table side.

If we were to raid Palace then surely Olise is the better bet. Downside he has already turned down Chelsea and have signed a new deal.
