Generally throughout Human history the higher the infant mortality rate, the more children each family has had. Simple survival tactics, if the infant mortality rate is 80% and you want two surviving children, have 10.
It's not just starvation they have to worry about, lots of diseases as well.

Lack of contraception plays a part too, blame John Paul II for that.

He's not even as ill as the 2 yanks and they recovered after treatment, you couldn't just leave the bloke out there
