if he ever becomes prime minister (god forbid) who on the world stage is going to take this cartoon character seriously? he even got married to his long term partner shortly after becoming labour leader for one reason & one reason only - because he knew the far more prim americans would take a dim view of dealing with a man who was 'living in sin' & had a couple of illegitimate kids. which makes him a fucking hypocrite like most of his predecessors.

you're missing the point. there's even more hypocrisy in american politics than there is in our own. plenty of crooks have become president but the bible bashing, 'family values', etc. society that pervades much of america will lead to most top us politicians pandering to the religious right's morality code in the same way as dubya did for his entire presidency. don't forget he relied heavily on the religious right to get himself re-elected. and also remember that even the most liberal us politician is parked somewhere to the right of kenneth clarke.
