Editing .avi clip

I need to edit a five minute video and get a 30 second clip out of it.

Its .AVI but I can't seem to get Movie Maker or Picassa to actually process the editing.

Any suggestions please.

I think it can be done with vdub, small download and freeware too, I use it for putting AVI files together

30 secs doesn't seem long for a clip, do Asda do a service on the photo counter?
