EDL in Manchester, March 2nd

Someone posted a few weeks ago about anti-fascist sentiment in Manchester. They said it was very strong a few decades ago, and manchester was very active in countering the nf etc.

Is this still the case these days? Im by no means a hardcore leftwinger, but I sometimes fear that the country is leaning more and more to the right, and more extreme viewpoints are becoming more widely accepted.

Or maybe they are just more vocal?

Apparently so, I'm reading a book about the British and Irish volunteers on both sides of the Spanish Civil war and there were numerous volunteers for the International Brigade from Manchester including Sam Wild, a commander from Ardwick.

Which British culture are we preserving ?

The tally ho, let's go hunting and live in a big country manor drinking pims and educating our children at Eton whilst looking down our noses at everyone else in the land.

The new rich and famous, wags, footballers and celebs?

The hardworking tax payers who slog each week to pay our mortgages and rents etc.

The Jeremy Kyle un-employable scum class who have kids scattered everywhere and drink special brew all day or sell drugs for the big hard gangsters ?

Just look at this country and it's culture?

The south hate the north
Scoucers hate Mancs
City hate united
Yorkshire hate Lancashire
Geordies hate Mackems

Etc etc etc

I am very straight talking on the issue with religion and the Asian / Muslim debate.

Religion is bollocks and divides people, Christianity as I have known it is fading fast and any christening or wedding show a congregation of half hearted or non praying with hyms mumbled and everyone just cannot wait for the piss up.

However the Muslim faith is different the majority are bang into it 100% and truly believe their faith 100%. I have several Asian / Muslim customers and have often seen them in prayer and it scares the shit out of me how transfixed they become whilst in mid prayer.

The UK now have many cities and towns that have huge Asian / Muslim areas and the rate of population growth due to both birth rate and immigration is frightening. I travel the length and breadth of this country with my work and for those of you that don't and live in mainly white / black British areas then get in your car and have a look at areas in, Birmingham, London, Luton, Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton, Sheffield, Blackburn, Burnley, Bradford I could go on and on and on.

On a recent trip to Blackburn I was chatting with one of my Asian customers and through ignorance asked why there was three large mosques so close together ? Thinking that it may be three different Muslim groups. He laughed and simply explained that they just keep outgrowing them !! ( if you dont believe this then drive to the BB2 postcode of Blackburn and you will see three huge mosques within one mile of each other.

Every town and city I visit I have both Asian and white/black customers. The British talk of how the town has changed over the last 30 years and how the pace of change and growth is getting quicker.

Our two cultures are poles apart and more needs to be done to get children mixing at an earlier age.

The EDL was born out of Luton, a town that has a history of problems between the two cultures clashing. I would guess that others join who live in towns and cities that are also affected and then the majority join up for the opportunity to play up and be a big man for the day.

My fear is that this isn't going to go away and in twenty years we will either be a country with major problems or a country that is working well together in harmony. My head tells me that we will have major problems.

Britain has a culture where in many cases integration has worked well with thousands of mixed race marriages between black and white. These cultures have wanted to integrate. The areas that I have mentioned seem more intent on creating and growing Muslim areas and culture in terms of religion, dress and in general making no attempt to embrace aspects of British culture, be it music concerts, football etc ( I know a small percentage do ) which is great.

It's a fucked up situation, in the words of Depeche Mode

"people are people"

And on that note...................

I fuckin hate Leeds :)

I own a grey hoodie (from Topman) and I go in the South Stand. Such sweeping generalisations are pointless when you're trying to put yourself above the EDL in terms of your perspective.

So you support tax evasion - avoidance then, no wonder you are in cahoots with these right wing fascists. :-)

This English - British culture they are so motivated to preserve, do they want to return to the 48 hour week? sending children up chimneys? having slaves (oops maybe shouldnt include that one), doffing their caps to the landed gentry?
No doubt they also think that it is acceptable to get home from the pub on a saturday evening and give the wife a hiding as well

Looking at that list, and the description in each category, it's not hard to imagine which group you see yourself belonging to ;-)

But what exactly does this mean... British culture is constantly developing and adapting.
What is it that you are scared of losing?

Who said I'm "scared" and "losing" ??

I'm in favour of preserving my cultural heritage ie; things I've always done, my Father has done and his father has done and so on... Yet if you are thinking I'm not open to adopting other cultural traditions then think again as I've done all kinds of stuff throughout my life that have developed initially way beyond these shores such as my Martial Arts (BJJ & Muay Thai)

Finally, another strange thing I have come across is about the teachings of Islam and how Muslims "should" lead their lives yet I find myself actually leading a more cleaner existence than many Muslims I know of, as in I don't drink/smoke/do drugs and play around

But you've still not explained what you mean. What exactly is British Culture and Heritage?
As an Island Britain has been ruled by/invaded by/influenced by a number of different groups of people (Scadinavians, Romans, French...).
'We' are a melting pot of loads of different ideas and we always have been.

My ways are very different from my mothers and a world away from my Grandmothers', not because there's a Mosque at the end of the road, but because I have been offered more choices and made different decisions.

The EDL have fuck all interest in preserving anything and have as much link with cultural heritage as a turd. They hate Asians.
That is the extend of their thinking

The question that you ask is the same question I ask in my first post.

I know all about the immigrant history this land has, I mean my routes are extensively researched and on my Fathers side is a long history of Anglo-Saxons and on my Mothers side? Welsh immigrants moving to Manchester and before that they were Spanish settlers in Wales.

I'm not bothered about Preserving your culture, I'm interested in preserving my culture and positive things I've taken from my forefathers.
if or when I have children one of the things I can guarantee they'll be taught is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (something which originated from Brazil and before that Japan)

And as I type this I'm drinking some Green Tea (China)

I probably learnt more in my short time over in Thailand than I ever did in the British Education system (what a pile of crap that was)

One issue I have is with extremism and people being forced to have certain beliefs.
This also includes white extremism however.

great post, I'm not sure it's even about enforcing Brith culture rather than protecting ourselves from the views and laws Islam will opress us with

I just went to street view on google maps and I am being honest here in that I don't want my neigbourhood to end up looking like BB2 in Blackburn

This is not what my Grandas fought two wars for

I'm moving out of Rochdale because of the way I feel as a minority because i'm white and culturally different.

Complaining about it falls on deaf ears so my only other alternative is to move.

The EDL may indeed be a bunch of racists but putting that aside for one moment it is worth looking at the growth of the Muslim population in the UK.

The Muslim community in Britain was 1.6 million according to the 2001 census, 3.3% of the then UK population. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/apr/08/population.islam" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/ap ... tion.islam</a>

In 2008, "the Muslim population in the United Kingdom may now number as many as 2 million” the then home secretary, Jacqui Smith.

"Pew’s UK figure for 2010 is 2,869,000, which is equivalent to 4.6% of the population. There have been other indications of a dramatic increase in the numbers of British Muslims: the UK Labour Force Survey recorded a rise from 1,870,000 in 2004 to 2,422,000 in 2008 so Pew's findings aren't unsupported by independent data."

<a class="postlink" href="http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/damianthompson/100069830/the-muslim-population-has-grown-from-1-65-million-to-2-87-million-since-2001-say-researchers-what-does-this-mean-for-liberal-britain/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/damia ... l-britain/</a>

This is a 1,200,000 increase in the number of Muslims living in the UK in just 9 years 2001-10. Pew also expect this figure will be 5.5m or 8% of the UK population in 2030, that's a near 100% increase on the 2010 figures in the next 20 years. Anyone can see where this is going.

The demands from this ever more numerous and therefore ever more influential Muslim population will grow ever louder, be it demands for Sharia, Halal or anything else they may wish for. It is difficult to see either a Conservative or Labour government standing up to pressure from a “minority group”.

At least stop to consider what pressure this growing Muslim population will exert on the non Muslim population of this country and how this may play out particularly when we are/were moving towards a secular society where the religiously deluded are ever more irrelevant, the polar opposite to the religious demands of Muslims a group defined by their religion.

This is not about protecting our traditions be it fox hunting or anything else it is about defending the majority from the demands of an ever growing religiously deluded vociferous minority.
