EDS/B teams in the St Johnstone's Paint Trophy

It begins....

First the PL teams then the sectarians from Scotland chasing the ££££££.

The Premiership are doubling the prize money currently on offer. I can see why they're letting them do it. Roll on the EDS's lads winning the cup next year.

Might be a good opportunity to get in some new away grounds.
We might be able to beat our infamous 3007 record

Presumably, it will be restricted to U21s, rather than 'injured' senior players returning from a spell on the sidelines.

If this is the case, I'm all for it. It will give youngsters a chance to play in fully competitive games against seasoned pros.

I honestly don't think its that bad, obviously theres a benefit there for City but do the lower league fans really care about this cup? At best its a nice trip to wembley and a good chance to have some glory but in the grand scheme is it that great for those clubs. In the long term the extra money being pumped into the trophy is far more important for these clubs. They should get the full gate receipts too, financially it'll be a boost to those struggling teams.

I think this will also add some positivity to the trophy and make it more mainstream, there is a real chance it will be televised and generate more money for the lower league teams.

its a legitimate way to keep the EDS under our roof but still testing them against men, imagine if Kelechi had already had the chance to play against men and gain valuable experience prior to getting his debut.

Just heard from a mate that many prem clubs doubt that they will take part.. Because players listed for the 25 squad or on International duty can´t take part meaning that many clubs would have to rely on 16-18 year olds..

Good idea until some 35 yr old journeyman clogger from Fleetwood decides he's gonna make a name for himself by crippling someone like Diaz after he's 'megged him for the 5th time

Wouldn't be surprised if none of the PL teams enter it. Looks like it will be u-21's (good thing), not open to any players in the 25 man 1st team squads but played during international breaks. That means that any U21 and youth internationals will not be available. This might leave City (and other PL teams), with a couple of U21's and the rest made up of 16/17 year olds. Can't see them risking them at that age.

Rags might do it just to get a sniff of a trophy...

Now that wouldn't surprise me at all. Mind you, and I know I'm off at a bit of a tangent here, imagine being in a coma since 2013 and waking up four years later to hear that the rags had won the Johnstones paint trophy. You wouldn't stop laughing for weeks...
Now you mentioned it i can't stop giggling at this post.

Seems like a good idea to me. The top clubs in Spain and Germany play their reserve/youth teams in their lower leagues and these nations have a much better track record of developing young talent than we do. In England so many promising young players reach 18 or 19 and just stop dead. They need competitive matches with hardened professionals to prepare them for the Premier League or the Championship. It has got to be good for lower level clubs as well with increased revenue and interest.

What's the criteria regarding players and ages? Because the scum played a lot of season pros in there u21.
