To be fair, the argument wasn’t really that Islam is responsible, more that they come from a culture that treats women like shit and then proceed to treat women like shit in the UK. The argument was more that they come from an extremely conservative culture that sees women and girls who go out by themselves at night and hang around with guys, in a particular way. Of course, it’s complete bollocks, as we typically find out afterwards that these men are just part of organised criminal gangs, usually involved in things like drug dealing and other criminal activities.

Have also read in Yasmin Alibhai-Brown’s book Refusing The Veil that Asian girls were victims too.

I’ve always said this. There’s this narrative that it’s ‘okay’ to abuse non-Muslim girls but Muslim girls are seen as off limits. But there’s no chance that Muslim girls (and boys) haven’t been the victims just as much. The difference is they’re less likely to speak out because of the more insular nature of certain communities, and they’re less likely to have their story told if they do, because it doesn’t fit the narrative. But make no mistake, this type of thing is just as likely to happen in the Muslim world as anywhere else, and often in the same way it did in the Catholic Church.

There was a separate thread for the Archbishop but he was basically criticised for not asking various police forces why they weren't making a case against the perpetrator, after the church authorities reported the abuse. Less certain is how much he knew about Smyth's abuse prior to 2013. His own chaplain once described him (in his presence) as "the least self-aware mam I know", which may explain a lot.

I think that in any closed society - and there are a few if you think about it - there's a good chance of sexual abuse.

Conservative societies tend to have an attitude of shame about sex - which militates against admitting you have been raped or whatever, as the shame falls on you - and they also tend to have an enhanced respect for authority figures.

Imagine you're a young girl in 1920s rural Ireland and the priest rapes you. The chances are no one will believe you. They're more likely to call you a liar. If they do believe you, there's a good chance they'll blame you for being provocative. Because that's how it works. This is common to misogynistic societies going back centuries. I used rural Ireland as an example. But it could as easily be medieval England, Victorian England, rural Pakistan, or 1001 other examples.

Let's be honest - women and girls have been abused for centuries. It's not something just invented by a handful of Muslims in Britain. And the way to end it is to modernise society, elevate the status of women to equal, and make sure there are no dark corners where this shit goes on.

I agree. It’s one of the biggest scandals and cover ups we’ve ever had, from the police, local government and social services and it’s still going on.

It’s awful what has happened. There needs to be a national enquiry and it should be talked about more.
