My latest offering for Betfair - on why it's the end of an era for City. Took no pleasure in writing this but it needed saying.

Silva isn't done

he may have been a little inconsistent this year, but with the shape of the team that is hardly surprising.

Play him in his proper role, give him quality runners off the ball and support from midfield and we will see him shine

Can't take any piece of writing seriously which puts Silva on an aeroplane to Spain. Certainly not at the end of this season. You buy players to compliment your best, not ship your best out to bring in someone who may/ may not be a success.

What Silva is this season, was what Yaya sought of was last season. Statistically improved with greatly reduced impact on the game. I would keep Silva as he is a phenomenal player, but if City doesn't get 2 or 3 more talisman next season, we'd witness the decline of Silva. Not only does he need other talismen, so he cant be marked out, he also needs them so his intelligence can shine.

But make no mistake, this season's Silva is greatly inferior to the last 3 seasons. The signs are here now for all to see. And the results have been painful. But hey, an improvement in 3-4 positions is simply needed.

Personally, I think Hart, Dihno and Clichy are the only improvements on last season, and Hart's is due to being very poor last season, he is still not as good as he once was. Clichy is our only outright player, playing at a higher level than before. Fernadihno is about the same. Everyone else has dropped a notch and some like Yaya 2 notches and Kompany about 4 notches.

Even thought the likes of Yaya, Navas (who actually might be playing just as well as last season) , Dzeko, Nasri, and Jovetic often get the brunt of the hate here, the truth is everyone, From Aguero to Silva to very worryingly Kompany, have all been below par this season.

We have to improve the starting 11 every season, that is how championship caliber teams operate. We didn't som we are here :(

So this kind of pisses all over Davids recent interview where he claims he wants to stay at City and hopefully win a CL Medal with us.
Mr.Silva never appears to come over as a bull shitter,so I`ll take your article on this occasion as wide of the mark mate.
By the way this is possibly the first time I`ve disagreed with your usual wonderful thoughts on our Club. But each to his own, mate.

Didn't you think Yaya had a good game at the weekend?
Also it's Silva's highest return goal wise since he signed so there's an improvement. He might not have been at his very best but to say he's been "greatly inferior" is a stretch.
Dinho was pretty poor for the first 4 months of the season and has only hit his stride in the last couple and Clichy is as hit and miss as he was last year.

I guess I'm saying I dont agree with you.

Bring two genuine pacy and skillful wingers in like Sterling and De Brunye, play David in the number 10 role and he will win the player of the season next year.

Fernandinho and Clichy both had indifferent starts to their season's but picked up very well in the end.

The rest I mostly agree with, especially the decline Kompany and Zabaleta's level is worrisome

But about Silva, I still don't think you could call it a greatly reduced impact. The impact has been there in terms of goals. Its also difficult to impact the game as far as running it is concerned if the rest of the 9 outfield players are in a form/confidence slump as they are now. Fwiw, I think he was good pre-injury in terms if running the game - but after the arsenal home game where he was marked out of the game he hasn't really been able to run the game, which directly coincides with our run of results. It would be unfair to judge his impact in such a scenario.

As I said before, and you have also pointed it out, give him 3 or 4 top quality players and he will shine again. He needs movement in front and he needs support from the midfield.

If I remember correctly (which I may not), I think our best run of form this season came not when Silva was out and we had a few other injuries. Our form then started to dip when Toure went to the ACON. Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not. Either way, I would hate to lose Silva as he's a delight to watch when in form.

Zabaleta could easily be used in midfield and a faster right back brought in. You still have Zabs as a option at right back and I feel he is a better option in midfield to Fernando. Milner is another who is able to play in a number of positions and should stay. Mangala will come good, very good, but we need another quick nonsense centre half . Vinny has been brought back from injury to quickly, to many times and is looking like a wreck of a player. If we are to replace Yaya, we need to look at replacing Fernando as well. Nasri should only go if we bring Koke and Pogba. Upfront we need way more pace, Sterling, Barclay and Bale. Throw in Sergio and you have a fear factor which will push teams further back. Its the full backs that I really couldn't suggest as new options. I felt Byram would be a good shout from Leeds, but I couldn't pick a right back, Alves would be good for 1-2 season, but that's a lazy choice. We need our full backs to have Clichy's speed and touch, with Zabs stamina and heart. I just feel we need to see some of the youth players playing, but 4-4-2 isn't going to work with what we have , as we need real quality and pace in the wide areas.

Like it. I agree with Silva. Him yaya Dzeko aguero kolorov jovetic all to be sold to raise enough money to overhaul the squad
