Energy, the environment & climate change.

It's a dangerous game to play as the fines for a breach of environmental law are potentially unlimited.

Aye, and apparently the companies disappear as quickly as they appear. He reckons it's a future public scandal in the making, but before the story breaks, there's shitloads of britain getting poisoned. This is all anecdotal of course, he's just my mate, but he's been with the company for 20 years and he's not one to go making up stories like this. It was frightening listening to what he had to say.

What are the chances of punishment happening though? The Environment Agency (who enforce the law) budget has been cut by over 50% over the last decade.

They tend to go for the big fish where they have a high probability of winning their case. Some companies have been prosecuted many years after the original offence.

I've done an IEMA accredited Environmental law and policy course (a few years ago now). Some of the stuff discussed on the course was exactly this. We had a guest speaker who was a prominent Environmental lawyer (Kate Kellehr) who gave us the down and dirty on some of the cases she'd worked on. It really was staggering what people think they can get away with on an industrial scale.

what's frightening is having a gov who are allowing these bastards to get away with it but, with captain cuntpants in charge, that ain't going to change

The more and more I read about the subject the clearer it becomes that we are well and truly fucked, maybe not our generation but I fear for what my children and grandchildren are going to face.
We really are the masters of our own demise.

I think it might be worth promoting this to the Politics sub-forum.

Net zero and climate change are about to be politicised into the stratosphere

Looks like Farage may lead for a push to put net zero up for referendum. The angle is to put climate and net zero firmly into the culture wars arena, further stretching and fracturing the UK public.

There really isn’t a more horrible Brit is there

A quote from the bbc website report on climate clubs.

Mr Harman-Turner, who lives in Brockley in south-east London, said he believed football clubs could help lead the way in making fans aware of the issues around climate change, and get them involved in innovative ways.
"Manchester City have been collecting rainwater on the stadium roof and they're turning it into a matchday beer - that's the sort of thing that feels really interesting, and really powerful, as this subject matter can quite often be quite dry," he said.

Well done City.

I have a background in aircraft electrical/avionics/electronics, but I have also done some work related Environmental Protection type stuff.

Personally, I think a lot of the early take up 'green' energy companies are using it to secure future profits and not necessarily thinking about the environment. A work colleague (electrical engineer) who had PV's fitted to his roof a number of years ago now devised a way of maximising the output from his panels by applying a trickle flow of water across the panel to keep them cool and increase their efficiency (using a modified greenhouse automatic watering system). He managed to get a 30% increase in output over about 6 months, which he was feeding back to the grid. Out of the blue he got a knock on the door from his supplier, and and was told in no uncertain terms to pack it in or they'd be forced to disconnect the panels.
Why?

For most of my life I have loved watching David Attenborough. Love the man. These last ten years I always feel a sense of sadness as he tells how another species is on its arse. I don’t watch them as much. I have three grandkids and I worry what will they have to put up with because the power did fuck all?

I just hope we see saving the planet as the biggest economic, as well as ecological win and not too expensive. It’s like being on the Titanic as it was going down and worrying if you left the gas on at home. Priorities.
