For me, the key player for England is Eric Dier. He's the only English player of this generation with any positional sense, so he's the only thing holding the shape of the midfield together (a lot like Gaz Baz was before him and Hargreaves before him). If he doesn't play then we will be all over the place with a hideously unbalanced collection of box to box midfielders.
Also, if Rooney plays then we are already starting with our hands tie behind our backs. Either we have him as a lone striker instead of Kane or Vardy, which would be an absolute joke, or we go two up front just to accommodate him and sacrifice any chance we have of winning the midfield, while still leaving out a better striker in place of him.
