Got a lot of luck here.

Slovakia are a well-organised team and probably deserved to go through.

120 minutes of football and there wasn't much more quality from England outside the 3-minute spell for the goals.

Fair play, it was enough today, but we were on a precipice for a long time.
It was like the 2014 European Cup Final. Totally undeserved and players also like in that final goading the opposition bench.

The FA's complaining over Qatar hosting the World Cup couldn't have been more laughable and hypocritical.

Talking as if this country has always had a perfect human rights record and that the tournament should not have been there.... yet in 1966 it was illegal to be gay in the UK.
Not only that Racism hasn't got much better since that era too.

Absolute garbage that tonight no dressing it up. Hopefully we can improve but there is no semblance of shape or tactical intent there after 8 years of Southgate and a crop of decent players.
It's like we have gone backwards over the last few years. We certainly haven't improved. With the players we have most would expect them to have got better. Unfortunately we have not. That has to be down to the Southgate.

Well put

Think they mentioned in the commentary that we have 13 new players since the last World Cup. Quite an amount of upheavel (I know not all were by choice). It's hard to build international teams with that level of turnover if you don't have the benefit of bringing 5+ of your starting 11 from a single club.

Certain things this tournament have been hugely unlucky and contributed a lot to our form. Whatever you think about them both Maguire and Shaw are huge for England and have been crucial parts of our defense and play in general. I'm sure even out of position, Foden would have been a lot happier and looked a lot better with a fit Shaw at LB instead of Trippier. Of course Southgate carries the can for all his squad choices and the lack of improvement since the last tournament is ultimately on his shoulders.

This is so much of an underdog mentality that I don't know where to start. That was NOT a good performance, first half, second half, or extra time.
First half dire, second half a bit better and we should have scored before we did really and ET awful after scoring. The fact we were playing Slovakia just adds to it. Southgate is a lucky manager. We always seem to get easy draws and today his luck maxed out.

Pickford nearly got relegated last season with Everton and still plays in goal for England.

Just sums up how poor English keepers really are.

Chuck that previous plan out the window.

Pickford
Trippier, Walker, Stones, Konsa, Shaw
Bellingham, Rice, Foden
Kane, Toney

Bamboozle them.

Yes because it is Spain and they have Rodri playing and not Bellingham.
Is that meant to be critical of City fans ? Obviously we'll be supportive of our player.

Just perhaps though, we can spot the difference in character (and ability too) between Rodri, and bellingham. One plays for the team, the other for his ego, one was very good tonight and scored, the other was woeful and scored, and yet thinks he's a hero. The fact that England needed that moment at all, was a down to his poor performance (and many others).

The "Who else" shows you all you need to know.

Imagine this squad under Pep.

Would absolutely bum every team in this tournament.
We'd certainly be an improvement on this, but I'm not sure Pep would make this lot into a team, given the short time he would have with them, you need team players to be a team, there's a few in this squad who are not team players.

Pep gives a lot of interviews in spanish or catalan talking about that kind of players (players who are not team players).

Pep gives them a name: "almas libres" ("free souls"). That's how he calls them. Sarcastically and disparagingly.

He doesn't gives names but, among others, Alexis Sánchez is a free soul.

So I think there are two kind of free souls: players you can never correct (Alexis Sánchez), and players you can. I think you can correct Jude in that way, making him a team player.
