I hate to say it but the sad truth is we didn’t have are just not that good. We didn’t have a great World Cup. We may have exceeded expectations but we weren’t actually that good. We haven’t progressed under Southgate, we’ve merely changed a bunch of older average players for a bunch of younger average players. As others have said the midfield trio of Henderson, Alli and Lingard simply isn’t good enough. The gulf in technical ability between the Spanish players and ours is enormous. I am completely unconvinced by Pickford, Trippier and Maguire. Kane may be a great scorer but he contributes nothing else. We are the International equivalent of a mid table team.
