He was shoehorned in 1/ Because he was cheap, 2/ Because he was already part of the set up and cheap, 3/ Because he is a yes man and cheap, 4/ Because as far as the media is concerned he is articulate and because he was cheap, 5/ Because he was available and cheap. We didn't even qualify for the World Cup in '74 and '78.

Are you honestly suggesting that the players mentioned above and playing in their era would not have got out of that group?
Thats not even mentioning the piss easy draw to the semis.
Hendo and dier should never ever be mentioned in the same breath as the players mentioned above even if your comparing their run or qualifying campaign.
Apart from both being above average from what I recall Englands run in the summer was despite of hendo being in the team not because of him.

England want to play a possession style,and having Henderson as the pivot will never work,give me jack Wilshire over him any day.

i really think southgate hasn't got a fucking clue how to go about possession football, england are so overated from the goalkeeper to harry fucking kane ,southgate needs to grow some bollox and get players that can actually do the job rather than players who play for certain teams.
this nations cup shite wont help either , there is too much emphasis on winning the group ,he should of played the young up and coming players not the tried and trusted shite from the world cup.

Where do I start?
The first point in my defence, m'lud, is that I was referring to the hierarchy in the FA being more interested in the financial aspect of the matches rather than the best team being picked on ability to perform. That's what is wrong with the England set up.
1. Loads of young players coming via lower leagues. Isn't that how most English players start off. In lower leagues, and get poached by the big boys, or am I being overly cynical?
2. Representative in years. In what way? Most from 3 teams plus a few others, or are we talking about the age mix?
3. How do City represent me? They wear a blue shirt , the same, I presume, as the team you support. Yes, the same multi millionaires you shout for.
4. Most of the country supports England. Most of the country don't go to football matches and couldn't tell you who played for England unless they saw their pictures in the Sun or on the gogglebox. As for busy, have you been to the Christmas markets?
5. Why am I posting? It's a forum. Why are you?

- 'FA being more interested in the financial aspect' - you can apply that to every single club, the premier league, city ..... most sport tbh
- representative as in they dont just all come from the big clubs and tbh most seem like decent guys
- they wear a blue shirt ? is that it - thats why the represent you
- wasnt the semi final watched by 30 odd million ? and yes it was busy. I've never seen it like that before in town for any sporting event. half the country watched it.

how are england overrated. no one gave them a chance before the world cup. most fans/media were happy with us just getting out of the group. we dont have the players for possession football either. imo south gate has been picking the right players and has left out a lot ( wilshire, hart for instance) and brought in players like chilwell, tarkoski. kane is one of the best strikers in europe - dont see how he is overrated.

who would you bring in to do a job ?. i think gk, defence and up front we are good. its only midfield, but we barely any midfielders right now who are playing every week.

Yet again the lack of midfield creativity is alarming. Henderson Dier Alli Lingard. Nothing will progress in this formation with these players. We need to bring width back and play 4-2-3-1. Got great full backs decent options at centre back and allows width and creativity through the middle.

Southgate has a limited pool and got decent results at the world cup. We deserved to draw yday so can't be too disappointed with the result or moan too much. Henderson had a particularly shite game.
