Squad named today -

GK - Hart, Forster, Foster
DF - Clyne, Stones, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines, Gibbs
MF - Shelvey, Delph, Henderson, Wilshere, Ox, Lallana, Milner, Sterling, Townsend
FW - Welbeck, Rooney, Lambert

I would have liked to have seen Shawcross, Bertrand and Routledge called up into the squad.

My starting 11 would be -

Forster
Clyne-Cahill-Jagielka-Gibbs
Shelvey-Wilshere
Milner-Ox-Sterling
Welbeck

Players like these will never get a chance as they aren't "flashy" or "trendy" enough for brand England.

Bertrand got a few caps in the past purely due to the fact he played for Chelsea, despite the fact he is a better player now. We seen Johnson never get a look in with England after he left us, even last year when he was on form. Same with Downing, who is currently playing excellently and has some of the top stats in the league this season but since he plays for West Ham he is unlikely to get a chance yet Townsend who barely plays for Tottenham gets in. There are many examples of this.

Chambers gets called up the instant he signs for Arsenal even though he was actually behind Clyne at Southampton before he got injured. Clyne only seems to have gotten called up because he scored some goals and got noticed. I think Clyne is Englands best full back even when everyone is fit.

But people will always have disagreements with who is picked, I just think England is particularly bad for picking the most popular players rather than the best for the team. Not that it really matters as any team they put out should be good enough for these games.

I agree with some of what you say. Bertrand is a better player than Gibbs, but not sure I agree he is better than Baines. Baines has struggled for form after the world cup, but think he should still start for us.

I agree with Clyne, but I am biased since he is an old Palace boy. I have always thought that he was better than Chambers currently and don't see why the latter is starting ahead of him.

I don't agree with Downing though. He had his chance and he had his chance before he had made the big move. He was part of the dismal failure for the 08 campaign. He has been good this season, but still not enough to disperse Sterling, Milner etc who have done it for England.

Townsend is not in the team, because of what he did for Tottenham. It's because of the impact he made for England in the qualifiers. He stepped up when England needed him and he is getting some loyalty in return. He probably will be dropped soon.

England team to face San Marino: Hart; Chambers, Cahill, Jagielka, Gibbs; Henderson, Milner, Wilshere; Welbeck, Rooney, Sterling

Blimey! Jimmy starts.

Mind you, on current form, Hodgson could hardly leave him out. If he had, it would show how fixed it is.

Another game against a pub team for Rooney to artificially increase his goal tally for England.
