We are truly blessed to have such a rich history and to have a history that has been so well documented.

And we have so many points in history where decisions made and deeds done that have shaped us as a nation.

From Henry VIII splitting from Rome and setting up the Church of England to the RAF saving us from Nazi invasion (see what i did there Elanjo)

Magna carta paved the way for democracy and to think that was nearly 800 years ago is pretty astounding.

Of course my favorite point in British history was the founding of the Labour Party ;)

Please enlighten us as if this is sarcastic then I disagree, by your previous comments I suspect not.

The NHS alone is another amazing milestone, however it's not solely English is it?

Honestly dont know, there has to be many Scots and Welsh just as important

Fair point morleyswife, but at some point methodism invaded taffyland ;) ....

The English civil war was the actual breakthrough though, thanks to the printing press

Caxtons invention was significant i agree.

But we could go further back and much further back to the time that England was seperated from Europe and the English Channel was formed. Oak trees flourished in this country and at one time covered 75% of the country. The Oak tree enabled us to have the best and biggest Navy on the planet. Without our domination of the seas we in all probabilities would be something like Iceland and just for Elanjo ruled by Nazis ;))

"A copy of the Chinese version of Diamond Sūtra, found among the Dunhuang manuscripts in the early 20th century and dated back to May 11, 868,[1] is, in the words of the British Library, "the earliest complete survival of a dated printed book.""

I suppose it is normal practice that history is looked upon from the point of view of the historian's location and dare I say it, ethnicity. Caxton was important, but he certainly didn't invent mass produced printed works.

Anyway, back to England, I'd say the First Elizabeth was significant, she inherited a right ball of shit, England on the bones of it's arse, turned it around and got the ball rolling towards the achivements of the Victorian age. It's been downhill since then and as we find ourselves in the twilight of the second Elizabethan age, guess what, we've got yet another big ball of shit to deal with.

The NHS in my opinion was a truly astounding achievement considering the that our debt was -250% of GDP when it was founded by the Welshman Nye Bevin

Alexander Bell the great Scotsman was the forefather of telecommunications

-- Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:26 pm --

ERI to VRI is a very long journey through history but with regret I agree.

Routing the Spanish Armada has got to be up there.

With a little help from our waters Lizzie managed to hold off the invading waiters and prove England as the superpower of the high seas.

Har har me lad.
