Enzo Maresca

I wonder if Maresca tries the treble formation again, with the quality of centre backs we have
I was wondering about this. Not really sure what his preferred setup is. I read he likes to push a CB into midfield but also he likes inverted fullbacks.
If the former, Gvardiol could do that. If the latter obviously our player of the year.

A back four of

Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol

Not sure.

I love Nico but You would have Him at Number 10 before Cherki/Foden?

I think Maresca will favour a back 3, O'Reilly/Ait-Nouri will be wing backs but join in midfield when attacking same with Nunes and a new RB.

I think we will also have a lot of posession but in our half of the pitch/halfway line rather than boxing players in, it's what He started doing at Chelsea as everyone started playing low block against them.

I'm praying for room for Haaland to run onto the ball more than anything!

He prefers a set up that gives his teams a midfield box with wide wingers and full backs tucking in. It’s supposed to create a “free” player but didn’t always work for Chelsea.

Whenever I’ve watched Chelsea they either play through the midfield box in a “Tika Taka” fashion or they miss midfield out altogether with longer balls through channels for wingers to run onto.

He also quite likes his goalkeeper being on the ball as the origin of possession and attacks.

Given all the comments from other fans that City are now on the decline, it would be a real satisfaction if Maresca could build on Pep’s successful spell and win the Premier League in his first season – or better the treble – to shut all those wankers up. I‘m looking forward to Maresca and very excited. Get behind him.
They all cried it was money keeping us at the top, now it’s turned to Pep. Maybe it’s a coping mechanism from window licking rivals

When he comes realistically it is not an easy job. No top level professional management job is easy the competition is intense and has become more so as more and more clubs are getting savvy about who they hire.

Guardiola as a top level coach , quite possibly the best there has been has had the lowest two points totals of his career in the last two seasons.

Although we undoubtedly have a stronger squad this season than last is it strong enough?

Since having bought Rodri to the club Silva x2, Fernandinho, Gundoghan and KdB have all retired (Rodri may go according to some rumours). They have been replaced by Phillips,Nunes Kovacic, Gonzalez and Reindjers. So six of a collection of the best premiership midfielders ever have been replaced by players none of whom have managed to hold down a first team midfield place. It is a pretty big ask to get in that quality of midfielder in in one transfer window or to expect dominance without that quality however good a manager Maresca is. Rather than poor tactics or whatever it has been the fact that we have only had a partially fit Rodri and Bernardo for much of the season that Pep has not managed to exert his former dominance.

I hope Maresca will come in and do a great job and have absolutely nothing against his appointment but unless our midfield recruitment improves I think he will be trying to fight with one hand tied behind his back.

Your last sentence is a bit concerning.

But Nunes and O'Reilly would be suited to that system.

With them forward I imagine a CB with pace might be a requirement.

So something like this?

Trafford
Khusanov Guehi
Nunes. Rodri. O'Reilly
Cherki. Anderson
Semenyo Haaland. Doku

Just watched a Maresca video and it mentioned how everyone started playing a low block against Chelsea, said his solution though was the striker dropping to provide an extra man in the middle and pulling a centre back out to leave room for wingers in behind. Also the keeper stepping up to join the centre backs in build up.
It will be interesting whether he uses Haaland to do that,to be fair most coaches know leaving room behind for Haaland is asking for trouble, and also what he does with his keeper.
As for O’Reilly he seems perfect for the inverted full back role to create the midfield box he likes.

Wonder if there’s any world where Harland is played on the right, so he gets the winger space and he could cut in and shoot on his left foot, with Cherki or Foden as the false 9 forward dropping deep.

Maresca knows City. We know him. Better to bring in someone that is more likely to fit into the overall structure. If we try to bring in a manager with a big ego that's not been at City before they will be tempted to change stuff when stuff isn't broken. Maresca needs to be given the players he needs and hopefully he'll do well.

Did they? Not doubting you just don't recall. My recollections of Peps first year was of immense excitement. I could see what he was trying to do with a bunch of oap's even when we were getting thumped.

Only time I recall ever thinking he didn't get city or the fans was the cup game against United at old trafford were we went with a largely reserve/eds side with the likes of maffeo and garcia starting and lost. That night, he definitely didn't get city, but he quickly learned.
Yes there were many mate yeah. I remember it well as I spent a great deal of time arguing with them. My dear late friend Bill being one of them.

Anyone have ideas on his playing style with Leicester and Chelsea.

Must admit, I only watch City these days :-)

Are there similarities to Pep or are there likely to be differences in style.

Possession dominant.

His Leicester team was only 2nd to Southampton Martin Russell in possession

His Chelsea team was only 2nd to Pep's City in posession.

It’s not a million miles away from Pep at all. He’s not as good of course, but it’s very much Pep-lite in how he sets his teams up.

he’s probably our best option for some level of continuation, of those we could potentially get.
