Enzo Maresca

I sent this to a mate who didn't want Maresca a week or two back to highlight the great job he did at Leicester, when those Pep leaving rumours were floating about and we all obviously wanted Pep to stay, my mate has started to come around to the idea of Enzo Maresca so thought I'd share what I sent.

Plenty of people a while back were saying that Maresca wasn't good enough saying he was crap at Parma, that he did crap at Chelsea which he definitely didn't if you look at the state of them since he left.

I looked into Maresca's Parma record and he joined a piss poor team who had only just been relegated, they had low morale when he joined and this is their dismal Serie A record before his appointment:

3 Wins 11 Draw 24 Losses from 38.

Then they hired Maresca on May 27th 2021 and this was him:

4 Wins 5 Draws 5 Losses.

(Including losses to Lecce and Cremonese who eventually finished 1st and 2nd)

They then sacked Maresca on November 23rd 2021.

I'm not sure what team gets relegated extremely badly, then expects a manager to work miracles quickly but Italian teams are known for it.

His successor:

7 Wins 11 draws 7 losses

(No better long-term and they didn't even promote to Serie A until 24/25, that's nearly 3 years after they sacked him)

Even if he did bad which he clearly didn't managers can't be judged on their early jobs, just look at Sir Bobby Robson's first job at Fulham:

6 Wins 9 draws 21 Losses.

Sir Bobby was savagely attacked by the press during his spell there, then the job he did at Ipswich after that was fantastic.

The job Maresca did at Leicester was absolutely brilliant and totally unexpected.

(I know this is getting long already but...)
This is an old post I made on bluemoonforum describing just how bleak it looked for Leicester from before Maresca arrived, just look at everything I say about players running out of contract and Leicester chances of coming back up, I've even said they're more likely a League One team in a couple years, rather than promoting which I was wrong about (but that was clearly all Maresca) and they've since sunk to the 3rd tier...

Leicester City have next to no chance at all of coming straight back up if relegated.

Leicester are in turmoil by far the worst position if they go down and their own fans (a couple of whom I know) would admit that too, it's not even close either they're in terrible shape this is the current season's expiring players:

This is next season's:

Leicester's owners nearly went bankrupt these past couple years due to poor turnover:

1000084375.jpg

That's likely due to COVID and the money hasn't come back to expected levels since normal travel resumed, it might not seem it at first glance but they're doing all they can in a bad situation, it's really messed up they didn't see it coming they're desperate for the club to survive and are depending on Premier League money to run it, all their sales have gone towards securing the club's future too scared to gamble with that money in wake of their own financial mess.

None of those Leicester players expiring this season will be pledging their undying loyalty to them, hardly any of next season's that actually matter all on high wages too will be wanting to stay to help them, they'll be on their bikes given the chance and that's without some of their better players on long-term deals who might be sold this summer.

It's a recipe for disaster... I'm talking possible relegation to League One in the next couple years type disaster if they can't convince their best players to stay, if they have too many leave it's unlikely they'll find players good enough to challenge they're truly up shit creek without a paddle, bar the survival of an already dead looking team and a miracle takeover and a good managerial appointment it's all looking grim, not impossible no but it seems improbable all of that... they desperately need to survive because they have very little chance of coming back up anytime soon.

Enzo Maresca undeniably worked miracles at Leicester they promoted in style when he managed them, nothing I said from that old bluemoon post with how bleak it looked before Maresca joined was wrong.

Those Leicester fans I mention couldn't believe the job that Enzo did there and was honestly in awe of him, as they 100% thought they'd be struggling that season in the Championship.
They were incredibly disappointed that once they promoted Enzo left for Chelsea, another team who also look far worse for not having him in the dugout.
The truth is that Maresca's spell at Leicester was actually that great a period, that he probably prevented their current implosion (them dropping to the 3rd tier) from happening a lot sooner.

Personally I'll always want Pep to stay above anything else but if we lose him which I doubt (at the time), then I'd honestly only choose a few over Maresca and at least 2 of them (Kompany and Enrique) are tied down long-term.

Pep>> hiring anyone else... but Maresca is far from the worst person we could hire.

The attack is broken. Otherwise we'd had scored the goals in loads of games to allow for inevitable defensive feckups. Usually it was broken in the first half with loads of spurned chances or nearly perfect link play. But sometimes our second half were the collapse or lack of cohesion.

My hope is that Maresca and Vianna first recognise the stuttering performances we've had and then combine to fix it.

Like I said it won't be easy because the cause isn't obvious.
How is City''s attack broken? Doku, Haaland and Semenyo are arguably the best forward line in the Premier League.

Thank you. Romano has been suggesting this for some time. I would like everything to be in place in time for the World Cup so that we can all start our plotting and scheming.

I wouldn't say it's broken, but there are absolutely more goals in there than we scored this season. We missed a lot of chances and didn't get on the end of pull backs or passes across the face of goal.
Maybe we could argue about thw word "broken" but I think people are having selective memories if they dont recall how frustrating our attack has been for a while now and how we were unable to keep points despite dominating play.

The fact that we were top scorers is a reflection perhaps on how every team is struggling to break down each other.

Signs of us "fixing" this will be coming away with victories despite conceding poor/late goals, seeing the attackers genuinely happy with each other and consistency over 90+ minutes.

There was a joy to watching us a few years ago that I would love back. We were exceptional. Now we arent. Lots have many excuses like injuries, signings etc but it really only matters what we do to get that magic back. IMO.
