You live a nicer world than me and are no doubt better off for it, but believe me I have seen scores of people hang themselves from shorter ligatures than that. I've seen people hang while sat in their armchairs at home and just leaning forward. I've seen one woman who hanged herself with the handles of a designer handbag in some kind of statement about the debt she was in from online shopping to be look flash. Length of ligature is meaningless and no indicator at all of anything suspicious

Much more likely one of the spy agencies he was associated with arranged his “accident” if it wasn’t a real accident or suicide. I suspect he was too much of an embarrassment for quite a few people following the revelation of his criminal activities.

The Spanish authorities did an autopsy so it would be difficult for him to be alive.
