I think initially when Pep signed his new deal and we were in mid-table, we probably promised him big transfer plans with a chance to overhaul the squad and being open to the likes of Zinchenko, Mendy, Stones, Rodri, Bernardo, Mahrez and Aguero leaving.Agreed, I also think we have been putting the funds aside for a bit hit on two incoming players knowing we need a new striker plus maybe one other.
I think the original plan was an overlap year with the little Argentinian but the injuries have put that in question, despite how well things have gone.
I also believe the flexibility of the defensive players mean we won’t see a left back signed; so we will actually only see a striker coming in (unless a Stella left back is suddenly available).
This of course is totally separate to the potential of Messi coming, in which case we will see Sergio sign a one year extension irrespective of condition.
The turnaround in our form will no doubt lead to a turnaround in our transfer plans. Suddenly Rodri, Bernardo, Stones and Zinchenko will all be fully in our plans with new deals most likely for the last 2.
Should we go on to win the league, we historically never “go big” in the market. We like to reward the squad who brought us the success.
I think we’ll struggle to move Mahrez and Mendy on without having to loan them and pay their wages so I think they’ll end up staying.
Suddenly our “big summer” will be signing a new striker and most likely renewing Aguero for 1 more year as an experienced back up.
I also don’t think we’ll sign Messi.
