If you had to make in a lab our new striker/Aguero replacement, you couldn’t create anything better than this guy. Clinicality, physical presence, technical ability, diversity in goals, pressing, but not just that. Also his age: still his career ahead of him, so much ambition. Pep loves to work with young players who want and can learn; he prefers them over established and experienced players every day of the week, players he can mold and call his own. Pep is clearly in love and impressed with him and can’t wait to work with a guy like this, because the current tactical set up of the team isn’t sustainable in the long term, and it badly needs a World class striker — one that doesn’t have to stay on the bench either because of fitness issues or because of technical inconsistency, if you all know what I mean. Haaland also has the winning mentality, and based on his interviews, an understanding of the game and of the team beyond his role and sense of self. And despite that, he is a superstar, one whose appeal will only grow and grow, bringing lots of cash wherever he goes and to whoever sponsors him. He will dominate in a larger market with global visibility (like England or Spain) and also because, and that’s another point, he has, at his very young age, European success. He knows how to play in the UCL, with unbelievable numbers, and that is key for commercial success (Internacional reach) and it’s the sporting priority for the club and the players as it stands (even if not for all the fans). And, if all that isn’t enough, he knows the club, has family history with club, likes the club. This identification from the get go can’t bought.
And yet, yes, there is a price. That is a price that may scare some fans, but the club knows it’s an investment that will pay itself with commercial returns and worth it for the technical possibilities.
As for He Who Shall Not Be Named: you don’t stop yourself from marrying the right woman/man because the in-laws can be nasty. You learn how to live with them.
Should we have other targets? Absolutely. But it would be incredibly stupid not to exhaust every chance of getting him this summer, financially and through negotiation skills. Try everything we can. And I have faith, and a rational belief, that we will close this deal.
