Dont really follow spanish football too closely, but is there any racial history between the two Barcelona sides with Barca being seen as the Catalan side, are Espanyol seen as a Spanish side , or is there any historic differences in this regard, I recall once hearing that Athletico Bilboa at a time would only play Basque players, in much the same way that for so long you had to be born in the county of Yorkshire to play cricket for that county.

Athletico Bilbao still have the 'cantera' policy where they will only pick players of Basque descent.

All this considering, the fact that they have never been relegated from La Liga is an astonishing achievement.

Can't remember which paper it was, but I hope whoever was responsible for printing the Glenn Johnson to Bilbao story a few years back isnt reporting on football any more.

Possibly the same reason as City don´t have the England flag on their badge.
Not really relevant.

-- Sat Jan 14, 2012 5:13 pm --

Although the defender Fernando Amorebieta ws born in Venezuela.

They can bend the rules to suit.

Just noticed this thread and I too am well impressed by the Espanyol fans 21st minute applause, in memory of their former player who wore the number 21.

What about the Etihad busting into applause in the 23rd minute of all our home games?

RIP MVF

Can't believe you consider FC Barcelona to be like Manchester Pepsi.
Can't believe you think so low of yourselves that you see Espanyol fans as some kind of role model?

okay, some of what's been said here is true, but mostly isn't.

Athletic Club (incorrectly called Bilbao) are open for players from anywhere in the world as long as the have a basque heritage, or the lived in the Basque region for a certain period before being pro football players.

Espanyol are the club for Spanish immigrants to catalunya and it's a surprise it has taken espanyol to move to El Prat where the descendants of the immigrants live. There lays a certain comparison to celtic.

When you consider the those Spanish immigrants were not there adapt or make for themselves a better life but infact to enforce their Spanish Catholic, Conservative fascist culture into catalunya (where catholics had a really hard before and during the civil war). there are deeper and more horrid facts than this.
Like Rangers in Scotland, Espanyol are currently trying to re-write their own history.

admission prices to FC Barcelona were high for the spanish immigrant workers who were not made to feel to welcome by the locals however, the fans of RCD Espanyol of Barcelona were far more friendly to them.

City and their fans are a little more like atletico madrid.

So to sum it up Espanyol are a spanish equivalent of both Celtic and Rangers..... wow

Not true.
Obviously you are a hater and a Barcelona fan who signed only to write this bullshit.

Most inmigrants are FC Barcelona fans(like most of catalans footballs fans, unfortunately).
99% of Espanyol fans are catalans and Espanyol has a really plural fanbase.
And if you want to speak about political...how about talking about Gaspart an Nuñez??
They are the 2 FCB presidents that FCB had since 1978 to 2006 when Laporta won the elections. Both were far-right oriented. ;)

Espanyol is named there because when the club were founded, there were only spanish players. FC Barcelona was full of foreigners players.

In some things City is similar to Atletico de Madrid(huge fanbase in Madrid, like City in Manchester) but in others is close to Espanyol(the lack of media attention and the way Barcelona act as a religious sect in the same way United environment do) .

Pretty sure both of his parents are Basque, and he was raised in the Basque Country too.

Yep always made me smile this.

Espanyol were a team of Franco? They were formed years before Franco came to power.

i went skiing in the south of france a couple of years ago but we flew to barcelona which was the closest airport.

i really couldn't believe the amount of barcelona merchandise compared to espanyol. in fact i think i only saw a few espanyol footballs in one service station.

the difference is a lot greater than us and the rags.

needless to say but me and my mate wanted to get a football to knock about with at the place we were staying, he picked up a barcelona ball, i told him to fucking put it down, we're getting an espanyol one. he looked confused to say the least lol.

Going in April to Barcelona. Pretty much a football and beer fest, going to Barca vs Getafe and Espanyol vs Valencia (if theres tickets). Can't wait! Will see how they compare.

I guess they're not happy tonight. They've just got eliminated by amateur club in Copa del Rey. Espanyol is third La Liga team in a row eliminated by Mirandes.

In all fairness, as a big lump who you can stick up front to push defenders about, she is slightly better than Andy Carroll.

No shame to go out to a team with her in it.
