Essien

I'm not questioning you on this seeing as you see them a lot more than i do but i don't really see the two as similar players apart from the fact they play in midfield. Ramires is a stick compared to Essien and, arguably, they're miles apart talent wise as well.
They're very similar. Despite Ramires' size he is a destroyer. In fact the main issue we have with him is that he makes overly hard tackles and gets himself sent off. They both recover the ball and drive it forward with speed and break up play in midfield. They also get right in behind the CB's when necessary, in fact they can both play CB in emergencies. They're not really DMC's because they do a lot in attack as well - but the function they play in Chelsea is similar.

Essien is in a different class to Ramires at this time like I said, but we got him as his successor/backup I feel and that decision is starting to look a lot wiser with this chronic knee injury beginning to really take its toll. We need a CM, but we don't need to replace Essien specifically. We had a CM deficiency before this injury flared up again, hence the assault on Spurs for Modric.

If Ramires took a serious injury before Essien recovered however, we'd be in a world of trouble because that'd leave us without a midfield engine.

Ramires is shocking!

So who was the lad that had a belter against us?
comparing him to Essien he is nowhere near.

and yes that one game he had a belter no denying that! and i'v watched a lot of chelsea games and he's been poor

This will surely mean that Levy will demand a bigger transfer fee for Modric, now that he knows their need is greater and more urgent than before.

I do feel for Essien though, class player.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but is that the general belief on this board?

Of course I'm bias but I really do believe that money isn't relevant. Unless an absolutely ridiculous bid comes in, say 100m I don't think he will be leaving.

The "improved" offer still only came in at about 1.3 Jordan Hendersons, which is laughable.

With Essien injured, and Sandro also out for the start of the season Spurs position has been made stronger in my eyes.

Regarding Essien, a real shame to see him injured. Perhaps Mikel will properly step up to the mark, he's still young isn't he?

I understand your partisanship, but I think you're being a bit naive if you think "money isn't relevant". It's very hard to make a stance with a player when they want to go, because it will be to the detriment of the club eventually. An important player being unhappy can rub off on the squad, so sometimes you have to accept what money you can get.

There are comparisons with Tevez. Ultimately it is very difficult to keep an unhappy player and using other player's valuations is misleading. For Henderson read Carroll; he went for £35m, and is obviously inferior to Tevez, yet we'll have to accept a bid of around £40m should it be forthcoming.

Once a player publicly expresses a desire to leave the club's bargaining position is severely weakened.
