I remember paraffin heaters in winter. The house was so cold we had two or three dotted about. One of my jobs was to carry a gallon can down to Mr Hulse's shop and get it filled. All quite normal back in the 'good old days' when windows had ice on the inside.
No one seemed to give a thought to fire safety, but looking back, it was a real hazard. Those heaters stank, but it was better than freezing. In normal circumstances, only the main living room had a coal fire. Though I do recall having one in my bedroom, just once, when I was very ill.
When boring old farts go on about how great the 'old days' were, I have to laugh, and I'm a boring old fart myself.
Spent a weekend at a friend's in Leamington, back in the seventies. It was basically unheated except for paraffin heaters. That weekend was freezing. The problem was that they really only heated a radius of about a yard or two around them. So in the main living room — surprisingly roomy — there were about four, dispensing islands of vague warmth, but not heating up the whole room at all. But funnily enough, I found the smell of them very comforting.
When there was no other form of heating, you were happy to have them.
