My mind is more or less made up about getting the PS3 but the only thing to put me off would be the ability to do the ethernet thing for online play. How big is it and how far would it stretch? I'd need it to be pretty damn long to go from the PS3 to the broadband box personally so I was wondering if it'd be a worthwhile investment.

Yeah it's broadband wireless.

I'm inexperienced in ethernet matters so any advice would be much appreciated.

So the ethernet would be automatic? (confused) It'd trace it automatically?

Forgive my thickness but somebody said in order to play online I need a cable to plug it into the back of my broadband box from my PS3 for it to work.

Not sure why you require an Ethernet cable?,my PS3 connects online through my wireless router just added my username and password then I was playing online no need for any cables 

So as long as I have my broadband box, it's all systems go? I was under the impression that if my pc wasn't on then the box wouldn't light up and it wasn't on in that case. I'm rubbish with all this console stuff, I really am.

you just need a wireless router and your laughing,if you have not got one then you will have to plug it in to your modem with a Ethernet cable, you can pick up a wireless router for about £20 .00 if you don't have one ),best having wireless you can use your ps3 all around the house to play online :-)

Go into network settings on your PS3 and you'll have to add your pass key from your router.

I don't know too much about them, but I reckon you'd need wireless broadband in order to have the wireless router too.

Where would I be able to get the wireless router? Should I just ask in game?

CTID you won't need a wireless router, because you already have a wireless modem. I've not got a PS3 myself, however going off any other modem's default configuration when you search for a wireless connection it should pop up in the list on screen. You'll need to put a WEP or WPA key in when prompted, this obviously depends on what you've set it as but it's normally written on your Modem.

A wireless router is normally only used for people who have an existing connection setup and require wireless access throughout the house...i believe.

You'll be fine with what you've got CTID, PS3 is wireless & by the sounds of it so is you're Modem - gettin them to 'talk' to each other might be the fun bit tho ;)

What is the WEP or WPA key?

Would them 'talking' to each other be dependant on how far away they were? That is my concern because my PS3 will be in a totally different room to it. My modem is more or less right outside my door but my PS3 will be just round the corner. In that case I'll need a wire won't I?

It's normally a 10meter radius mate, these things are designed to cover whole house's not just a room so you'll be fine.

WEP n WPA keys are security passwords (normally about 10 digits long) that may/may not be set on your modem. As i said, they're normally written on the physical modem or in your documentation somewhere....that is, if they're enabled.

What a star you are. Thank you very much for your help.

I've got a PS2 at the moment and will probably be getting rid of the controller and the box so if anybody wants it free of charge, let me know but it'll have to be next week sometime.

It'll be nice to go into the 21st century with a PS3!

I think it's free, i've always liked Playstations...i just can't justify spending £250-£300 on a system when my XBOX does practically everything the same.

Quality costs money at the end of the day and I'd rather have excellent graphics and a better gaming experience, rather than go with some cheap dated crap which you could probably pick up for a fiver at a charity shop nowadays.

I'd be delighted to spend that amount of money if it is as good as everybody seems to make out. Thanks for all your help Tom, it's much appreciated.
