Ethnic Minority Search

The sub-continent don't really see football in the same way as we do, cricket is their big sport. This recruitment drive is to attract people to the club who ordinarily wouldn't consider trying out, it's not as if black or white footballers are being excluded, they can try and get a trial at any point.

I don't really see the issue.

I think schemes like this are generally a case of them doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

But I still think if they really wanted top class asian talent they would invest in training and coaches form an early age, rather than let six kids have a trail. I can't help thinking they are synicaly doing this to try and crack the Indian market. Although I hope I'm wrong.

I also raises questions about homegrown talent. My view from reading posts on BM is that we like homegrown talent and I get the same impression from FIFA and UEFA. Should they have spent the money at home? I would still regard a foreign player brought through an academy as home grown. Views anyone?

Ok slightly controversial but the reason that there are not many Asian origin players in British football is down to the fact that they are very under represented in junior / youth football Where football clubs tend to look for talent from age 6 onwards. I think this is due to a insular outlook and until the Asian community intergrate more then the talented Asian footballers will not come to the attention of main stream scouts.plus from personal experiance i have played with some very good Asian players one in a local league who had played to a high standard semi pro and the amount of abuse (some openly racist) he received was staggering

I have to agree with this post.

It's one of the last taboos left in the game.

I heard about this project initially on a well known political agenda website but thought it was a wind-up, now i've just seen this article on the BBC and it confirms;

Chelsea trial for Asians

Premier League champions Chelsea will give six Asian players a week-long trial at the club as part of their search for an Asian football star.

The six were chosen after recent trials at the club for Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan players aged between eight and 13.

It is the scheme's second year and 450 players turned up for three days of tests watched by Chelsea's coaches.

Now this is a Race Issue and this does in my opinion take the human race almost back 5,000 years were SlaveMasters would seek specific races of people to work for their businesses.

Now these boys won't be whipped (presumably)
But this for me is going about encouraging ethnic minority participation in football in the wrong way.
Sure Asian Youth are under-represented in this game but just holding a competition excluding people based on their race isn't right.

All the money The Roman Empire has, they could assist local councils in areas with large Asian populations such as Bradford/Burnley/Oldham/Bolton in creating high quality sreas for the lads to play the game, networking with schools and parents to encourage their children to use the facilities.

Not just poaching them out of obscurity based on their genetical traits.

Can you imagine City coming out now and saying; Today we have launched a campaign to find The Premier leagues first Albino football player...

It's clear you have an agenda yourself. There are Asian leagues purely as a response to the difficulty they have participating in the normal league structure, and players within them may not have benefitted from the standard of coaching and competition that would go with it. Should CFC be able to hoist some talented youngsters into the league structure at the expense of some remedial work to bring them up to the standard they may have attained otherwise then it's a win win situation for everyone. CFC get some talent, Asian youths receive encouragement from having role models that have acheived some measure of success and themselves become more integrated, and to cap it all it also reduces Racism as they become more visible and accepted.

It would be interessting to hear from any Indian blues, to see what you think. As a white middle class lad from Wilmslow, I don't think I can really have the perspective on this.

Obviously I do, my agenda is I don't like seeing any group excluded, white/black/yellow/brown from the boogie down ;)

The facilities i've come across in largely asian communities have been shitty, Chelsea/City whoever should invest in decent facilities, maybe then we'll see a pakistani premiership player

Who's being excluded?

Had a chat about this with an asian mate a few months back and his take on the fact that their aren't many asian footballers was, in a nutshell, down to the parents.

Basically he reckoned that Asian parents actively discouraged their kids taking up sport as a profession because they see education for their kids as the holy grail and sport should be nothing more than a hobby. University being the target, not training 4/5 nights a week when they should be studying on the off chance of a career in sport.

Don't know how true that is but he has a lot more insight into it than most of us.
