Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

It is a business decision more than anything. They came in with the aim of winning trophies and creating a global brand. As trophies are won more fans are too and a bigger ground is required. Having a bigger stadium than the rags and a better one of course, for corporate mainly, is part of the business strategy I am sure. Manchester's biggest stadium is a great way to dig another nail in the rag coffin.
Only!

Slightly off topic.
Planning app just gone in for cleared Ancoats Retail Park to be 450+ car park for possibly the next 5 years! No rush then for MCC and Manchester Life(ADUG/City).

They paid 35 million for it mate. No brainier to get some income off it for next few years. Will be a break clause in the parking lease if they progress quicker than thought.

I thought they were supposed to be building a supermarket there at one time. About time they cleared those empty warehouses / shops. A bit of an eye-sore.

Where the small purple, silver, and green circle massing building is?

Any news on the Collar site land, or the proposed MMU Institute of Sport?
That looks mint

Looks a bit tight, especially with the Metrolink tracks running alongside it, but it looks like that parcel of land is big enough. The Arena would probably have to be vertical on all for sides, and boxed shaped, to fit into that parcel of land, rather than something spectacular. Saying that, Architects can pretty much design any type of building to fit into a restricted site. What do you think?

Took a few aerial picture’s of the site and of the MEN Arena from Google images as a rough comparison.

Don’t forget, a concert arena may look very different to the MEN which is more like an indoor stadium built for basketball, ice hockey and boxing as well as concerts.

A concert arena could be in the shape of a theatre rather than have a huge floor space in the centre with four sided stands.

So it may well be very different in area and shape to the MEN.

This is Shanghai’s Culture Plaza Theatre:

Imagine one like the Apollo: standing ground floor area and seated tiers above... but on a huge scale.

Not if you want 20,000 plus you will need a MEN style venue internally, the Albert hall and radio city only hold around 5-6000

Glasgow Hydro holds 13,000 and is in a theatre style, it wasn’t built to host a non-existent basketball or ice hockey team like a lot of arenas in this country. As a concert venue it’s miles ahead of the Manchester Arena - whether it could be worked up to be 20,000+ I don’t know
