Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

It is preferable to the basket ball arenas, and the bigger the arena the worse the seats get and everything else.
Agreed. Much better seeing bands in smaller venues although difficult when they make it. Saw Oasis in the Apollo 2001, Prince @ the academy in 2014 and they were epic gigs!!

Yoc can make out the next roof truss ready to go up.

Good work @jrb

Today

More of the sleek black exterior cladding as gone on. I think it looks great. And it will look even better with the moving LED screens above it.

In this photo could they not make the outdoor seating area bigger as a lot of fans will sit here before games

8500 Seat basketball sounds good. I wish we took basketball more seriously in this country. It's an exciting sport!
Barça have a basketball department and a few others do. Real, Bayern, Monaco, Sporting, Benfica, Porto, Fenerbahçe, Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, Partizan Belgrade, and Red Star Belgrade all compete with them in the top-flight EuroLeague.

The sport isn’t as big as football in Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, etc but those clubs feel it’s worthwhile to compete in.

It will bring in a chunk of revenue for those clubs, just as the diversification around the Etihad with hotel, restaurant and shopping complex will do. CFG also owns shares in the Goals cage footie business

Why not add a basketball team to the ever-growing CFG monolith?

Not sure the timing is great for that.

There was a time in the 90s when Manchester Giants were playing some home games at what was then called The Nynex Arena and getting crowds upto about 15,000.

These days I think it’s a big crowd if they scrape more than a few hundred.

True, but there was also a time where women’s football attracted single to double digits. Now it attracts similar crowds to the men’s game, where stadium capacities allow for it.

We invested in the game and helped it grow. We can be part of that with any sport, these things all go in cycles to some extent, other than with football which is the national sport, not to mention the most popular sport globally.

The euro teams do just fine, with the right corporate guidance

Well apart from the clearly untrue first paragraph, yeah I’ll agree, these minority sport’s popularity go in cycles. I’ve no problem if they want to try and push basketball. I quite like it. Just saying, it would be a difficult time to do it.

Sorry but that is absolute bollocks. The womens England team get great crowds but the WSL crowds are crap except for the odd high profile game held on weekends when there are no mens games

Those are the games held in higher capacity stadia

Look as the games held at the smaller stadiums - attendances are shocking.

The problem with womens football is the lack of competition in the league. 4 teams so much better than the rest that it makes 90% of games a waste of time.
So, exactly like the men’s game?

Handball would be better than basketball. It is played in 2k venues for a reason.

Women's football if promoted as an olympic type 'event' can draw a crowd, but I doubt it washes its face. It was snuffed out at its peak 100 years ago.

I feel like the club should be able to get 5-6,000 people to go to WSL games, even if it's giving tickets away. Run promotions, target young children and their parents, win over the next generation etc.

Recently it seems like the Women's team has been relegated to a very minor topic at the club.
