Etihad site and Utd’s Bank St

The City of Manchester Stadium was originally meant to be United’s ground. For the 2000 Olympics bid, the 80,000 stadium that would have been built there would have seen United move in after the Games, next to their original home.
Yes, I talk about this in Manchester A Football History and include the story from an interview I did with Graeme Stringer. He talked of Fergie’s involvement.

Manchester A Football History is one of the books that subscribers to my website can download PDFs of. See:

And yes, United did play at Bank Street, after being founded by a scouse foreman in a Newton Heath Trainyard, so they are definitely a Manchester club ... despite what a few of our fans think!
Newton Heath became part of Manchester in 1890.
They were formed 12 years before in 1878.

To be fair West Gorton wasn’t part of Manchester either until 1890. A few people have brought this up on my social media accounts recently. Key thing to point out to any Utd fan who tries to go on about stuff (yes, I’ve had a Utd fan this week try to tell me City wasn’t formed in Manchester, so it does happen) is that Ardwick began playing within the City of Manchester boundaries in 1887. That means that of the two current Manchester league clubs, Ardwick/City began playing in the city first (and have never left). United/Newton Heath started playing within the boundaries of the city of Manchester in 1890 and moved out in 1910.

Not that any of this matter of course.

That was pie in the sky after the 1992 and 1996 bids got no where near so doubt there were any firm plans. They were even deluded enough to have a victory party thing at Castlefield. Maybe there would be half a chance now if London didn't get it in 2012, but there wasn't a remote possibility the then then.
It was definitely something the council wanted and the decision ultimately was given to Fergie to make (seriously). It’s all in Manchester A Football History. A compromise plan by the council was for Utd to play European games there but remain at OT.
