I long for the day when we can have the metrics on energy expended running and kicking the ball and the metrics on energy expended protesting to the officials. All that appealing, finger wagging, and crowding round the ref needs its own training.

Some of the greatest coaches of all-time coached before European competitions existed.

Pep plays football the way Cruyff taught him, who was taught by Michels. Rinus Michels took his football philosophy from his old mentor Jack Reynolds with influence from Jimmy Hogan. Two Lancastrian coaches who won trophies in other European leagues and were the main influences of the Austrian Wunderteam, Dutch Totaalvoetball and the Mighty Magyars… to the great 1970s Ajax side, to Pep’s Barça and this current City team.

Reynolds and Hogan have had a much greater positive legacy in football than Jose Mourinho will.
