Im not very educated when it comes to Europa league, so this may sound like a stupid question , but 'IF' we reach the finals, how many potential games will need to be played?

For anyone else wanting to asking random Europa league questions- this should be the thread to make things more organised.

The UEFA Europa League comprises three qualifying rounds (dont think we play these), a play-off round, a group stage and five knockout rounds.

Qualifying
In matches in the three qualifying rounds and the play-offs, clubs play two matches against each other on a home-and-away basis. The club which scores the greater aggregate of goals qualifies for the next round, with away goals and then penalties used to determine the winner in the event of a draw.

Group stage
The 38 play-off round winners join the ten losers from the UEFA Champions League play-offs. The clubs are split into 12 groups of four teams, playing home and away against each of their pool opponents between September and December. Two sides from each section advance, proceeding into the round of 32 alongside eight third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Knockout phase
From the last 32 until the semi-finals, clubs play two games against each other on a home-and-away basis with the same rules as the qualifying and play-off rounds applied. In the last 32, group winners and the four third-placed sides from the UEFA Champions League with the best records are seeded, guaranteeing they will play the second leg at home. Teams from the same group or the same association cannot be drawn together. From the round of 16 onwards the draw is free.

Final
The final is decided by a single match, which this season will be played in Dublin on Wednesday 18 May.

Play off round ( last night) = 2 games
Group stage = 6 games in groups of 4 clubs. ( top 2 in each group go through)
Knockout phase :
Round of 32 = 2 games
Round of 16 = 2 games
Quarter finals = 2 games
Semi final = 2 games
Final = 1 game
Total = 17 games
Almost another half a premiership season worth of games, hence why some clubs just don't take it seriously.

Thanks for the help.

Mancini's relatively 'big' squad seems justified with all the games we need to play, FA, Carling, Europa league, Premier League.
Keeping RSC isnt such a bad idea when I think about it now, he can play our FA + Carling's and latter stages of easier PL matches.

And seriously, Dublin?

if we proceed through this stage (God willing)

how often are these games played?

im coming to manchester in november to watch city games for a month, if theres more games in november (any cup games) would be a bonus to get along to some extra games.

do you think we will have europa fa AND carling games in november?

Is the group stage home and away legs? Last time it was 2 home 2 away... Can anyone confirm that?

It's home and away, groups of 4 clubs and we play the other 3 clubs twice

Cheers! It's bollocks that it's changed. Last time it was a 5 team group and you played each team once.

I think they wanted the same format as the CL

Dublin would be a good trip but aren't we getting a bit carried away, we may not even play 50 games this season and that is including the assumption the mighty Timasoara don't turn the tie nx week!?

I can understand Mancini's stance on the squad though, you have to plan as though you're going to the final of every comp you enter and from his press conferences thus far he seems pretty confident that a final or two are on the cards! Can't knock positivity. 4th spot and I'll be over the moon though.
