More importantly why do we have to play a qualifier\play off? surely it should be called 1st round. I can understand fair play\7th in the league qualifiers having to play now but we were 5th top qualifier from our country we should go straight into the groups, along with teams from other countries in the same predicament.

it's down to the sheer number of teams in the competition including 3 lots of champs league dropouts. the only teams that enter at the group stage are the holders (atletico madrid) & the losers of the champs league 4th qualifying round (play off). the 3rd place dropouts from the champs league group stage enter at the next knock out round.
