European Cup Winners Cup Final 29/04/70

I was there went with my mam and dad and my younger brother.Met up with Stuart Gibson the City groundsman son as I knew him well even slept at his house by the side of Maine Road.At the end of the game we jumped down into the moat around the ground and got onto the pitch where I managed to get Tommy Booths shirt which now takes pride of place in the City Museum.Managed to get it signed by all the players. Also got invited to the players do at the night but was that soaked did not make it as had no change of clothes. So that is my story of the game as well as winning the ECWC and being there.

Wasn't even on live TV the first time ever or since that am English team in a major European final suffered this . It was because the fa cup final replay was live on BBC and itv , with probably ballet on BBC ,2 . Think highlights were on after 11 but as I was 9 and school the next day I was off to bed .

55 Years Today:

Would be great if we could play a friendly at Gornik Zabrze this pre season if it allows, great PR for the club I think.

As you come out of the train station at Zabrze there is very large painting on a wall that details their cup run that season, was incredible to see.

I remember being allowed to stay up to watch this but was distraught that my first ever hero Arthur Mann didn't get on
You would have been unlucky it wasn’t on theTV. The only way you were watching the game live was if you were in the Prater Stadium.

I was seven, and went to the match with my dad and Derek Trembath (great name), who was our next door but one neighbour in Abbey Hey.

We stayed two nights, and our first difficulty was with our 'continental quilts' as my dad called them, he said we had to get inside, so we undid the fastening and got in. The second difficulty was when my dad decided he could speak German and insisted on ordering dinner.

We waited ages to get served and when it arrived our dinner consisted of five sausages and a big blob of mustard.

The game passed quite uneventfully as I recall, I remember the rain, and sheltering in something like a coal bunker on the open terrace.

Difficulty number three came when we arrived at Vienna airport to get our flight home, only to be informed that it was delayed because our pilot had died. They gave us vouchers for dinner (Derek did the ordering), and I remember that I had some spectacular cake.

Difficulty number four occurred when my mum phoned Rignway because we hadn't arrived home, only to be told that our pilot had died, she didn't know he'd taken the celestial runway before our plane took off, and started to panic.

I remember finishing school at 3.30 at Xaverian College in Rusholme, City bus was just passing by on Wilmslow Rd on the way to Albert Square.

Yes and finding out the result was a pain. I didn't know until the next morning until I bought a paper on my way to school.

Not televised because FA Cup final replay on TV that night from the Swamp, def Chelsea and possibly opponents Leeds ( but don't quote me on that one).

Oh Vienna you mean a lot to me. Oh Vienna!
