Has any body suffered from this?

I’ve had blocked ears a few times, but it’s usually wax-related.

After a flight over Christmas, my daughter has had an ear infection and is down to a very low level of hearing.

The doctor says that it will clear up over time, but naturally my daughter is getting a bit panicky 10 days after the flight and no improvement in hearing. She’s currently breathing in steam / using water with menthol but so far no improvement.

Anybody got any experience of how long it takes to clear up or any suggestions?
 
I've had this problem for about 7 years
They told me I have a perforated eardrum. It hasn't healed.
I was on some congestion medication briefly but it didn't clear it permanently.
I've read about a procedure where a small tube is placed in the ear so the fluid causing the hearing loss drains down the throat.
 
My 5yo has it in her left ear, been told it will most likely go in her next growth spurt. Was given the option of wait and see, operation putting a grommit(sp) in or a hearing aid.
The mrs + kid opted for hearing aid, she just had a mold taken and she should get it soon (pink sparkly, you can pick a choice of colours).
Didn't want to just wait as it is bothering her at school and at home her not hearing clearly what is being said to her.
Not dismissed the operation route entirely, see how the hearing aid goes 1st
 
Thanks for the replies - @tolmie's hairdoo - the hairdryer is an interesting idea. At the risk of sounding daft, does the hot air go in through the ear or the nose?!!!

I have ordered a balloon contraption from Amazon that gets good reviews.

Forgot to say that the eardrum perforated last week but the doctor didn’t seem concerned saying that it will usually clear up.

@Dicko69 - hope your daughter gets sorted, that is not nice for a 5-year old to up with.
 
I had blocked ears for ages after COVID a year ago. Drove me mad. Felt like I was underwater. I did manage to get some relief by doing the bowl of hot water/flannel over your head so you inhale steam thing though, but combined with this video.

The guy is a little intense but the exercises are great. Might not work for you, but stick at them. Took me a couple of days but my ears suddenly popped and the relief was huge.

 
When my eldest was a toddler he had glue ear.
We went the grommet in ear drum route because we considered he was a critical stage for language development.
The grommet sorted it out and eventually fell out of its own accord.
He never had a recurrence.

Thanks, mate. We are both sat here like a couple of idiots running through those exercises.

No clearance yet, but my daughter says she felt her ears crackling a bit inside during those exercises so you may be onto something there.

Thanks. Probably worth mentioning that she is 24 so it's not that condition that a lot of kids suffer with when they are young.

May sound daft but get some SUDAFED spray and try that as a maybe relief.

I’ve had similar for a few months now. Had my ears syringed before Christmas but still both feel completely full and getting a lot of dizziness with it too.

Some of the exercises on the vid were what I was advised to try too. Has she got any pain in her ears or just feeling blocked?

No pain at the moment. She had two nights of stabbing pain but ibruprofen helped and doctor said there was an infection in both ears so she prescribed amoxicillin. Infection still in one ear so doctor took a swab with results due back next week.

The doctor has confirmed that there is no wax build-up in either ear, just a bit of gunk in one ear due to ongoing infection. She reckons it will ease over time.

Hope you get sorted soon - I think this is just one of the nasty viruses going around at the moment. Wife and other daughter have different symptoms and I’m the only one who is OK.

All three of my lads had glue ear when they were young and they all had there adenoids out and grommets fitted to drain the eardrum. They are all older now and don't have ear problems.

Had two very bad bouts where Flu has resulted in blocked ears with fluid.
Second time was Otitis Media. Nasal decongestant helped.
First time was worse though. Ended up Going private for audiology and CT scans.
On both occasions the underwater feeling led to persistent dull headaches.
Pain management and patience are key.
