Great contribution Wasington but you do need to stop hogging the limelight ; )

Nah there's no more, so I'll just trotter off to my cheese and swine party.

Don't think I've ever seen any, but was working at a the Fox & Hounds in Flixton years ago when the staff had a lock in. The manager was telling us about how the place was originally a mill of some kind and that the office was frequently used as a makeshift sick bay/morgue when there were accidents. He reckoned it was always cold in there and neither of his two massive Alsations would go in.
He'd just finished his tales when one of the bottles of Britvic orange behind the bar (the flat non-carbonated stuff) just exploded and fell of the shelf. We all looked at each other in one of those 'holy sh*t, did that actually just happen?' moments and after cleaning the mess up decided now would be a good time to go home.

Was it cold because it used to be a morgue?

NO! It was a makeshift morgue because it was ALWAYS a cold room.

Another mystery that turned out not to be magic.

Quite, most of these happenings can be explained away if we seek a rational answer and some are simply coincidence. It does happen, yet our minds are constantly seeking patterns and so will take them if they are offered up. Saves us from having to spend any more effort thinking.

Must have been a pretty miserable sick bay, if it was always cold then.
Yours is a fair point if it was used as a morgue, though. Were morgues commonly to be found in mills, though? I'm not being a clever arse, asking that. I genuinely have no idea.

You're not being a clever arse, it's a fair question, and I'll try to do it justice.

Most didn't have "morgues" as such, but as you say, if they used a room as a "make shift" morgue, they probably used the coldest room available to slow decomposition. Plus don't forget, during the industrial revolution we had children dying all of the time during forced labour, so finding somewhere to dump the cadavers was necessary. And while it would have doubled up as a sick bay, remember, employers at the time didn't exactly care for their staff. A "sick bay" was essentially where you took someone who was about to die.

I've got a few mates who went to Oldham 6th form, which is on the site of the old Oldham Infirmary. A couple of them had lessons in what used to be the morgue, and I've had the exact same argument.
