If you are in the street and in a moment of madness throw a punch.. (and you are caught) you may go to jail. The thing is when you come out of jail you are basically a free man and certainly within a few years you can have the conviction wiped from the record. It is called the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. The chances are you will not go to jail and once you have been fined that is the end of it.
As a football fan one moment of madness can cost you a lifetime ban from the one thing you live for and we have even had one of the Chuckle Brothers stating this bloke should be baned from every stadium in the world !

I accept he did something stupid but a lifetime ban and according to some, his kid taken from him by Social Serices and presumably put into care ..... We seem to have lost something somewhere.

Is spot on, Everton fans phoning Durham on talksport pointing out the media over reaction but pointing out the fan was in the wrong, Micky Gray agreeing with them saying a life ban is ridiculous, should be a year at most, Durham acting like a soppy social worker

@Machiavelli is correct from what I saw, it appeared to be Williams fault. If he hadn't pushed the goalkeeper the way he did then the other players wouldn't rushed over and the fans wouldn't have got involved. However, if you have a child, especially one that young, you have a duty of care.

I see Everton have banned him for life now and some commentators on the radio are saying that is an over reaction. What about all the other fans who were involved? The man with the child can easily be identified I guess but what is going to happen to the rest. Just wondering.

I don't like to see people banned for life for a momentary loss of control, it is draconian. Someone at 18-25 who does something stupid shouldn't still be suffering for it 20 years later. Williams who is supposed to be reasonably behaved and is at work caused all the problems and in his interview afterwards showed no remote or regret yet will get off Scott free as the ref booked him.

The whole incident is being blown out of all proportion, get a fucking grip of yourselves, three quarters of you obviously never went to football in the late 60s and 70s and 80s

It’s no longer the 60s, 70s or 80s; times have changed and so has the behaviour of supporters at football games.

However, the attitude of the authorities hasn’t and fans misbehaving in football grounds will rightly be punished.

However, I do think that the lifetime ban that Everton have imposed on him is excessive, and as suggested by Adrian Durham on talkshite this afternoon, the club has only taken this action to attempt to avoid punishment by UEFA.

When I saw the bloke with the kid I pissed myself. Now far from condone it as I've been known to throw the odd windmill punch but when holding your kid the instinctive thing to do is move away & keep him safe. That said everyone can get over excited about it & it should be forgotten until you think of the shit that Everton & the Echo have thrown at us over the years, it's been vindictive bullshit on tap.
