Gazza had a reasonable sense of humour and new he was there to entertain the supporters. Rooney is a surly individual with little character. The frailties that Gazza had came from a need to find acceptance and he found that on the football pitch. Rooney has developed a far more robust defence mechanism, he truly doesn't give a toss what anyone thinks.
That's why he will be fine while Gazza passes with little fan fare.
