Everton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

My interpretation is that Pep prefers the pause then overload as opposed to just beating a player yourself only to find little or no support in the box to put the cross into.

I get that, but when a player 'pauses' to the extent the oppo gets back in position, what was the point in the pause??

At least beating the player gives a better chance on goal for self or cut back.

I understand it can be frustrating from a fans point of view. I feel it myself as well from time to time but I have to accept that what Pep is doing is in the best interest of the team in order to get results. It can become tedious no doubt about it.

Superb 2nd half showing, really got stuck into them early doors 2nd half. Thought Walker was excellent 2nd half, Grealish was excellent all night, Akanji was very solid 2nd half once he was more in midfield. Phil got MOTM, he is becoming more and more of a high impact player, does little for large parts then comes up with something very special 2/3 times a match (not sure you can ask for more than that)
Somebody have a word with Ederson, if we are 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go, hold on to the frigging ball longer and stop passing it out so quickly....do the what everybody else does, waste some time.
Bernardo very quite in the first half, superb in the 2nd.
Vital win which shows our fighting spirit, this team will not give up easily

One more thing, that was a penalty, how some pundits etc are claiming it was not....the guy goes in, arm out, a bit raised too and it hits him flush...that is just the type of handball that merits a penalty award.

The thing is about Nunes - he's great when he's driving forward and creating options but it takes time to cement a solid place in a team . Bernardo , Rodri are good examples of that . Plenty of criticism of those two in their first season but when they grew into their roles that Pep moulded for them then they became undroppable. In time it's hoped that Nunes can develop a little more aggression or less timidity in keeping the ball in tight situations. Confidence is a big factor in all of this. He has the skill set no doubt it .
He made some great runs in first half finding space and taking good position. His iq is impressive. The only thing that is lacking is understanding' between him , bernie and rodri which will take ample of time to develop that kind of telepathic understanding. He can only get better with more minutes on the pitch.
Patience is the key as they say.

And maybe that worked when Grealish had the antithesis on his opposite side in Mahrez?

Now there's just Grealish and very similar in Silva.
Mahrez wasn't that different to Bernardo both are more likely to come inside both will keep possesion rather than dribble. Truth is Pep likes the control Grealish gives and while Doku offers something different he'll be expected to add some of Grealish's attributes to his game.Sane's inability to do that is why Pep never fully trusted him.

I think that's fair enough to back up your argument and maybe it's perception to see the talented player (at Villa) slow to a crawl in a lot of the games he's in for us. It's frustrating to see potential breakaways end up as nothing burgers because of the refusal to take chances.

I, actually, saw Doku do some of this in his last couple of games too, obviously Grealish inspired!!
I think it's much more Pep "inspired" as that is how Pep wants it.

Doku is unpredictable at the moment, I don't think Pep likes unpredictable, no matter what the fans want/like.
