Have you not watched Sterling play on the left for the last few years cutting in and shooting centrally? Or Robben make a career out of it? Hard pressed to say either of them are 10s would you? He's a winger, every knows it.

Sterling doesn’t do it anywhere near as Townsend does.

I wouldn’t call Robben a conventional winger either.

Er...Robben is literally the definition of an inverted modern winger. Sterling does it all time. His whole game is about cutting when on that side.

Sorry to inteject in where townsend plays, he is wide right or right wing, similar to Mahrez (but not as good) though he will cut inside to take shots.

Full-back is wrong as well, as they aren't the last line of defence in modern systems. Should be side-back.

I agree with Jonathan Wilson's take on the general labelling of players. They aren't fixed to what their positions are, players are a combination of attributes, some combinations allow players to play in a wider range of positions than others.

e. g. James Milner has played every outfield position bar centre back.

Townsend was playing behind the striker as a SS/CAM at the start of the season.

There aren’t many wingers these days either. They’re all wide forwards.

Well there was greater rotation of players on the pitch (i. e. Swapping positions during the match) under total football, so it isn't anything particularly new.

Catenaccio systems usually used to pick a right-back or regista style midfielder to play as a Sweeper, it wasn't a specialist position that naturally developed players without conversions. A right back would have played in a different style (more conservative and functional) than a converted midfielder, but they were both sweepers.

There's a difference between a style of playing a position and the position itself. Dani Alves and Kyle Walker play very different styles but they are both right-backs.
