Everton Thread | 2024/25

I agree that the old style European Cup was much easier to win back in the day. Indeed I remember Nottingham Forest beating Malmo in one of the finals.
But the counter argument to that is the fact that all competitors in the European Cup were actually champions of each league that they represented, unlike the current Champions League where 2nd/3rd/4th place teams compete, so in reality it is NOT the Champions League.
Forest also beat Littlewoods in the first round on the way to one of their titles, when the Scousers were in their pomp.

Not that easy, then?

Well yes I agree with you pal, but they were both champions ( or current holders of The European Cup), not teams that had qualified by finishing 4th the previous season.

The new format this season has made the group stage more competitive, but previously, it has been a piss easy for the top clubs to reach the latter stages of the competition.

It was rigged to ensure the best teams reach the quarterfinals, whereas in the example I quoted, it was pot luck, which club you drew right through the competition.

So I’m not necessarily sure that it was easier in the European Cup era.

imwish they would have stuck to champions only being allowed to play in champions league.

Then the only real winners would be city, united, barcelona, inter and bayern since the ruke change in 1997.

It also something worth mentioning to candle dippers and Franco’s boys.

Started well yesterday, looked very tired second period. Too many injuries to rest players so these guys just have to get on with it. VAR are a complete joke. But we are looking a lot more safe now, we should be staying up bar a disaster and that will do me. Being relegated in our final season at Goodison would be beyond a nightmare. We are almost safe now, I will breath easier when it is completly done. We can go to the new stadium as a Prem team, and you guys can come and visit us lol. Small stops, but we look like we have some kind of future at last. I am not expecting us to compete to win leagues, but it is nice to actually move forward. Moyes has done a great job.

We were discussing this en route to Tottenham last week.
In 76-77 City had qualified for the UEFA Cup and were drawn against the mighty Juventus, who at the time, formed the nucleus of the 1978 Italian World Cup Squad.
Even now (almost 50 years later) the names still roll off the tongue: Zoff, Cabrini, Gentile, Cuccuredu, Benetti, Scirea, Causio, Bettega..,...
Their clinching goal in the 2nd Leg was scored by Bonisegna who had also netted for Italy in the 1970 World Cup Final

Juventus were formidable and frightening, but funnily enough, they weren't even the best team in their own city, as the Champions of Italy were actually Torino who from memory provided Graziani and Zaccarelli for the national team.

Juventus knocked out City and then United in the Second Round.
United had just beaten Ajax who in 1976 were still one of the European elite.

Meanwhile in the European Cup Liverpool were paired with the Champions of Ireland Dundalk and then the Champions of Turkey Trabzbonspur, and suddenly found themselves in the Quarter Finals

Obviously it might occasionally work the other way round but with more rounds and more quality in the UEFA Cup nobody seemed too bothered until the self appointed bigger clubs started to lose in the early rounds of both competitions.

Never liked Everton particularly, especially “fond” memories of the fa cup quarter final at goodison, but pleased they are staying up and their new ground looks stunning. Also there is a good poster on here, toffeedude I think. And most of importantly of all, they are nothing like liverpool

Hi,toffee fan here, joined forum as I'm looking for advice really. But have had a look around your forum and quite like the set up and conversation. Interesting to read your reaction to what I'm thinking is a disappointing season,so I'm going to stay around, looks like a fun forum.
I'm staying in your city on the Friday before travelling to GP for Everton v Ipswich. I phoned your box office to see if I could get a ticket for your Wolves fixture, they haven't given me much hope tbh. Are tickets that hard to come by and is it unlikely I'll get one from box office on day of the match ?.

I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with your enquiry about tickets for our home games

Welcome mate. They are a good bunch on here. They dislike teams in red as well.

Easy solution

Go on match day wearing either Arsenal or Barca top and half and half scarf

Then go to club shop and spend a fair amount of money and then ask can you get a ticket

Bingo
